Current Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship-holder Lewis Hamilton is a heavy favorite to defend his title, while his Mercedes team is heavy chalk to win its 5th straight Constructors’ Championship in the upcoming F1 season, which gets underway March 25.

Formula 1 Season Set To Rev Up

The 2018 Formula One season will start March 25 with the running of the Australian Grand Prix from the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Australia (ESPN2, 1:10 am ET) as the highest class of competition for open-wheel cars gets underway. The F1 season is made up of a series of races held on purpose-built circuits and public roads around the world, adding to the urban look and with many snakelike turns the signature of these popular races. Last year, 33-year-old British native Lewis Hamilton, driving for the Mercedes team, was the Drivers’ Championship winner in F1, finishing with 363 points (he clinched in Race 18 of 20) and capturing his third championship the the last four seasons and fourth overall.

SBR's top-rated oddsmakers are pegging Hamilton — who has won at least one Grand Prix in each of his first 11 F1 seasons — to repeat this coming year with Mercedes even heavier favorites than Hamilton to repeat as Constructors’ Champions and win their fifth straight F1 crown. Let’s take a look at current Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship Futures odds from 5Dimes.

It’s pretty much a Hamilton and Mercedes vs. The World reality on the track and at the Futures betting windows with only a perceived handful of other racers and teams ’ given a remote chance to make a run at an F1 championship in 2018. But laying -140 to win $100 and enduring the entire 21-race season is probably really only for the very wealthy, the very risky or diehard Hamilton and/or Mercedes fans, although it’s fairly hard to make a case for other racers or manufacturers to upset the proverbial apple cart this F1 season. Other drivers (and teams) will have to get off to good starts in the season and hope Hamilton and Mercedes have an off year. Best of luck. Worth contemplation though, is second-favorite Vittel, a 30-year-old German who drives for (Scuderia) Ferrari and also a four-time F1 champion (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) who won his championships while with Red Bull Racing. The Ferrari teammate of Vettel is 28-year-old Räikkönen of Finland while 28-year-old Finn Bottas is the Mercedes teammate of Hamilton, considered by many as the best driver of his generation as well as one of the best in F1 history.

Maybe looking at Ferrari at +400 odds in the Constructors’ Championship Futures market is a good idea for the value-seekers, but true value is only ultimately attained by actually cashing tickets and not falling in love with the prices (numbers). There have only been three Drivers’ Championship winners (Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Hamilton) over the L8 years and just two different Constructors’ Champions in the L10 seasons (Mercedes, Renault), so at least be informed if planning on taking a flyer on one of the long shots in both markets. Whoops, gotta go and pass this dude. Be seeing you ...
