The 88th Academy Awards will be beamed live into your living room on February 28th and we handicap the nominees & analyze the Oscar odds for this year’s Best Picture.

Oscars Pick: The Big Short +125
Best Line Offered: at Bet365

Best Picture

  • Spotlight +110
  • The Big Short +125
  • The Revenant +450
  • The Martian +5000
  • Mad Max: Fury Road +6600
  • Room +8000
  • Bridge of Spies +15000
  • Brooklyn +15000

Spotlight is getting lots of love from the critics and just took home the hardware for Best ensemble at the SAG Awards. Ten of 18 journalists from leading trade and entertainment publications are now predicting that Tom McCarthy’s drama of the Roman Catholic Church’s cover up of the sexual abuse scandal will win the day. The film has received six Oscar nominations and scored a stellar Rotten Tomatoes score of 96 percent versus 88 percent for the surging Big Short.

However, this is not a one horse race. The Big Short grossed over double the money at the box office and copped the prestigious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures with the Producers Guild of America (PGA). That is extremely telling as the last eight consecutive Best Picture Oscar winners have won this award leading up to the Academy Awards. In addition, many of the voters for the PGA awards also vote for the Academy Awards and use the same preferential ballot voting system.

The Oscar odds are clearly reflecting that this is a close call between two critically acclaimed movies while the other six are merely window dressing. We have narrowed down our Oscar picks to these two but only one will win, and I say the star power of co-producer Brad Pitt may just be enough to tilt the scales in the Big Short’s favor.
