The Davis Cup Final gets underway this Friday. Join us while we analyze the highest value picks for this decisive contest and which team should lift the trophy.
Argentina is still looking for their first Davis Cup title after losing all their four previous finals – 1981, 2006, 2008 and 2011. From the team that lost in the 2011 final against Spain, Juan Martin Del Potro is the only player left on the Argentinean team. Besides Del Potro, Federico Delbonis, Guido Pella and Leonardo Mayer are the other three players chosen for this final by the team’s captain, Daniel Orsanic.
The 2005 champions – Croatia – reach the Davis Cup Final for the second time in their history. With an outstanding 13 – 2 record since 2013, Marin Cilic is the main star on this Croatian team. Due to Borna Coric’s recent physical problems, Ivo Karlovic decided to make his return to this competition after a four-year absence. Adding to these two players, the doubles experts – Ivan Dodig and Franko Skugor – are the other two players on Zeljko Krajan’s team.
Day 1 – FridayMarin Cilic vs. Federico Delbonis
Even though Delbonis is never an easy opponent with his solid baseline game, this should be an easy contest for Cilic. The Croatian won all their previous two meetings and the game conditions in the Arena Zagreb clearly suit his game style. Therefore, the first rubber should go to Croatia.
Ivo Karlovic vs. Juan Martin Del Potro
These two players know each other well with Del Potro leading on the h2h by 4 – 1. The Argentinean is the big favorite for this match yet, Karlovic is always a dangerous player, especially on Indoor Hard Court. Although we believe in Del Potro’s victory, the value on this match is definitely on Karlovic’s +2.5 Set Handicap at -127 at Pinnacle.
Day 2 - Saturday
Marin Cilic & Ivan Dodig vs. Juan Martin Del Potro & Leonardo Mayer
It’s never easy to predict which players will compete in the doubles match since the captains can change their players until the last minute. While we don’t have many doubts that Zeljko Krajan should maintain Cilic and Dodig, we’re not sure if Daniel Orsanic will stick with Del Potro and Mayer. However, even if Orsanic makes any change it shouldn’t be enough to defeat the Croatian side. With this in mind, we expect Croatia to achieve a crucial 2 – 1 lead with the triumph on the doubles rubber.
Day 3 - SundayMarin Cilic vs. Juan Martin Del Potro
This is without any doubts the match of the weekend with two US Open champions fighting for their country’s glory. Del Potro holds the edge between these two with 8 wins in 10 games yet, this is their first match in more than three years. Despite Del Potro favoritism on this match, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cilic emerging victorious on Sunday.
Ivo Karlovic vs. Federico Delbonis
Karlovic and Delbonis should face each other in the 5th and decisive rubber. These two players have featured some remarkable battles with Karlovic winning their last encounter a few weeks ago in Tokyo by 7 – 6 6 – 7 7 – 6. As it happened on their previous encounter, this should also be a very close contest, however, Karlovic’s higher experience should be decisive at the end.
Even though the value is not huge on Croatia’s betting odds at -192 at Pinnacle, we expect to see the home team lifting the trophy next Sunday. With this in mind, our suggestion is for you to add Croatia to your betting picks to win the 2016 Davis Cup title.
