The 87th Academy Awards will be on February 22nd and here we cap the best choice to take home the Oscar as we peruse and analyze the Academy Award odds for this year’s Best Original Screenplay.

Best Original Screenplay

The Grand Budapest Hotel (-162)

Birdman (+120)

Boyhood (+1000)

Nightcrawler (+5000)

Foxcatcher (+5000)

Here we have what appears to be yet another two-horse race between Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman. Both films will undoubtedly bring home an Oscar or two…or three or even more but I’m not content to chalk this category up to, well, the chalk. I believe there is an opportunity for a longshot here even though the Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay went to Birdman and beat out Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Birdman also captured the Critics’ Choice Award in this category over those two rivals as well as Nightcrawler. Therefore it would appear that the safe bet would be an Academy Award pick on Birdman to win the Oscar and make it a trifecta.

However, there is industry buzz that Nightcrawler could be the surprise winner in a category that rewards the most original and colorful film. Recent wins in this slot went to “The King’s Speech”, “Midnight in Paris”, “Django Unchained” and last year the romantic-drama “Her” starring Joaquin Phoenix as a conflicted writer who falls in love with a talking operating system that has a highly developed artificial intelligence.

This is an off-the-wall category that has given the Oscar nod to wild cards and longshots. Nightcrawler fits this mold and could very well walk away with an Oscar that few believed it would receive. Nightcrawler has been nominated in a host of minor major award ceremonies and has taken home the bacon in more than a few. But this is the biggest award of the Red Carpet Season and with Jake Gyllenhaall as the lead and Dan Gilroy as the writer/director it could make a splash with a story that scored well on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95 percent approval rating. Nightcrawler could win big and pay off big with Academy Awards odds of 50-1 which would make our Oscar evening a night to remember.
