Check out this betting preview article for the Academy Awards that will be live tomorrow. Here we look at the "who will win" and "who should win" Best Live Action Short Film.
Best Live Action Short Film
The Phone Call (-225)
Boogaloo and Graham (+350)
Butter Lamp (+550)
As you're sauntering around your Oscar cocktail party and the room is buzzing about Best Picture or Best Actor you can give your own two cents on the topic but then stun and impress as you wax poetic on the impressive nominees for Best Live Action Film. Yes, it is a category that gets second billing but it is also a category that we can use our expert knowledge on and slam our bookmakers as they offer Academy Awards odds on a grouping that they know little about.
Well let me tell you that the odds-on-favorite here, The Phone Call, doesn't stand a chance and anyone laying -225 on this also-ran might as well donate that dough to their favorite charity (I will give my address in just a bit). The chief reason why The Phone Call is the chalk here is because it features an Oscar nominee in Sally Hawkins and the voice of an Oscar winner in Jim Broadbent. Therefore, it's got pedigree but the windy story to nowhere will not impress The Academy.
You can toss out the Israeli flick Aya as it morphs from semi-interesting to clock-watching tedium. The Butter Lamp is a bit too "out there" and ultimately gives you a payoff at the very end that's not worth the investment - of time.
So now we have Boogaloo and Graham versus Parvaneh. Both are my co-favorites to capture this award but I am nothing if not a sucker for betting value so I will cast my lot with Parvaneh. Parvaneh is socially relevant and has already been feted as a Student Academy Award winner. Let's take 10-1 in the Academy Awards odds and cash that ticket!
