Last year Disney was robbed in this category when “Get a Horse!” failed to make entry into the winner’s circle. However, this might be as good a time as any for a make-up call and if the Academy Award committee sees it that then you can bet that Feast will take home the Oscar. But the issue here is, as with all Academy Awards odds favorites, is that they are chalk heavy and it is tough to lay all that lumber especially when there is another rival that has a puncher’s chance of coming out on top.
This season that creative dark horse is The Dam Keeper at +450 Oscars odds and the buzz has been non-stop about this painterly short with veteran animators Daisuke Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo, formerly of Pixar, at the helm. This film is no slouch after being screened at more than 75 film festivals and getting rave reviews. In addition to a boatload of industry honors The Dam Keeper has been feted at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, the New York International Children’s Film Festival as well as Anima Mundi in Brazil.
Though Feast has the long arm and industry cache that is Disney behind it, we will eschew laying -400 at WilliamHill and stake our money on a pony that has real value in this five horse race. Though it wouldn’t shock me or anyone else if Feast took home the hardware I believe that The Damn Keeper is worth an Oscar betting wager for Best Animated Short.
Academy Award Pick for Best Animated Short Film: The Dam Keeper +450.
