Get ready for the Academy Awards on February 22! Find out which is the best choice to take home for this year’s Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actor
J.K. Simmons – Whiplash (-3300)
Edward Norton – Birdman (+1400)
Mark Ruffalo – Foxcatcher (+2000)
Ethan Hawke – Boyhood (+4000)
Robert Duvall – The Judge (+5000)
J. K. Simmons, who some will remember for his virulent character portrayal of Vern Schillinger in the HBO prison drama Oz, is the overwhelming favorite to take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. You might ask why is this with so many deserving nominees in the category? Well, the best answer is to take a glance at who won this category in the three award events leading up to the Academy Awards. Those three events are the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and SAG awards.
The winners of one or more of those awards is usually a damn good bet to take home the hardware at the Oscars but when there is a clean sweep with all three committees coming to the same conclusion then it’s a virtual lock that the Academy will follow suit. This year that man in this Best Supporting Actor category is the brilliant J.K. Simmons who hit the trifecta and is looking for an Academy Award to take its place on his already crowded mantle.
However, nobody I know is going to lay $3300 on the Academy Awards betting odds to win a C-Note no matter how predictable this Academy Award wager appears to be and therefore we must look elsewhere. Although Ed Norton is one of my truly favorite actors he, like Simmons, played an unstable maniacal character while Duvall’s character in The Judge was the stereotypical hard-crusted old man ala Clint Eastwood that we have seen before. However, Oscar buzz is building that Mark Ruffalo’s nuanced portrayal of wrestler Dave Schulz in Foxcatcher just may be the surprise get that will separate the Academy voters from their brethren.
Academy Award betting Pick: Mark Ruffalo +2000 at WilliamHill.
