The 87th Academy Awards will be beamed live into your living room on February 22nd and here we cap the best choice to take home the Oscar as we peruse and analyze the Academy Award odds for this year’s Best Director.

Best Director

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Birdman (-162)

Richard Linklater – Boyhood (+120)

Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel (+4000)

Bennett Miller – Foxcatcher (+5000)

Morten Tyldum – The Imitation Game (+6600)

As if the Hollywood stars, starlets, directors and producers do not get enough fame and adulation, this is the season for the icing on top of the icing of the ice-cream brownie fudge cake known as Hollywood; as the film industry just can’t get enough self-congratulatory aggrandizement. But it is also an opportunity for us to peruse the Academy Awards betting odds and see if we can make a little cash while the Beautiful People and the glitterati hug, kiss and cry their way into our living rooms.

There are three big award organizations that hand out various ornate trophies prior to the granddaddy of all the award ceremonies which is of course the Academy Awards. Those being the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and the SAG awards. There is a correlation between who wins those awards and who takes home the Oscar. Since 1995 only twice have these organizations collectively failed to pick an Academy Award winner but it should be noted there is no SAG award for Best Director. This year the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice awards both went to Richard Linklater of Boyhood.

Now to the matter at hand. If you are seeking a longshot then I suggest you move on over to another category because this is a two-horse race between Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman) and Richard Linklater (Boyhood). However, if we are to rely on an outstanding barometer of how the category of Best Director will unfold then we should consider carefully that the Critics’ Choice has been in virtual lockstep with the Academy Award choice 78.5 percent of the time since 1995. Thus the decision is easy and Richard Linklater better get his acceptance speech in order.
