Uruguay and Costa Rica get their 2014 World Cup campaign underway when they collide on Day 3. Find out what odds have gone to press on this first round clash and where the value soccer picks are to be had.

Uruguay hot favourites
Even without Luis Suarez, possibly the best striker in the world, for Uruguay’s group opener, bookmakers tip La Celeste as the hot favourites to beat Costa Rica at -225 to win outright at Bet365. Is this an indication of the team’s depth and quality, or is it more an indication of Costa Rica’s lack of the same?

Luis Suarez underwent knee surgery recently to repair the meniscus in his left knee. His recovery is reportedly on track, and he’s slated to make an appearance at some point during Uruguay’s campaign. However, he won’t be available for Uruguay’s opening clash with Costa Rica, and it remains to be seen whether his absence will have a direct impact on the outcome of this match, not least, La Celeste’s run through Group D, which contains heavyweights England and Italy. Since Suarez is expected to return, sooner rather than later, Uruguay’s World Cup odds to win outright haven’t changed drastically, although they did swell up to +2800. As far as group betting goes, though, they remain mostly the same. They are very much in play at +175 to win Group D, sandwiched between group favourites Italy at +163 and England at +220. World Cup bettors, therefore, can assume Uruguay are still a good soccer pick to make it through the group stage, with or without Luis Suarez’s services in every match.

Uruguay boast depth beyond the Liverpool striker who led the Premier League in scoring this season. They have Edinson Cavani (PSG), one of the most lethal finishers in the game, and Cristian Rodriguez, Maxi Pereira and Diego Godin... and much, more. Uruguay made it into the semis in South Africa, and many have high hopes for another strong campaign on their home continent, where they are sure to enjoy lots of supports.

Costa Rica at the severe disadvantage
Costa Rica are the group’s no-hopers at +5000 to win Group D. The disadvantage permeates throughout, in every aspect of their World Cup campaign, including their opening clash against a classy Uruguay. Tipped at +700 to win outright, the odds are severely stacked against Costa Rica to mastermind the upset. What’s more, even a share in the spoils looms unlikely at +300 at Bet365.

This doesn’t mean that Costa Rica lack quality, however. On the contrary, this is a very well organised side that qualified stylishly behind the USA in CONCACAF with a 5-3-2 record and 18 points, well ahead of traditional favourites in this group, Mexico. The draw, however, hasn’t been kind to Costa Rica. Lumped into a section with three heavyweights in Italy, Uruguay and England, advancing into the knockout stages is going to be quite the big ask. Making matters worse is their recent performance in friendly action, which stands at 1-1-4 since they wrapped up their qualifying campaign. Of course, they could be saving their best for the actual event. Still, what are we to make of defeats to Australia, Chile, Korea Republic and Japan, and their last warm-up performance, which was a 1-1 draw to Republic of Ireland? Hard to say, but if this is an indication of what is to come in Brazil, the future doesn’t look bright.

Uruguay vs. Costa Rica Betting Tips and Picks
On paper, Uruguay certainly have the edge. They boast a world-class outfit, and even without Luis Suarez on the pitch, Coach Oscar Tabarez has plenty of options to turn to in his stead. Certainly, Uruguay, with all their firepower, practically leap off the page as the correct soccer pick at -225 on your World Cup betting card. This doesn’t mean Costa Rica are without a shot, but at +700 odds makers rate their chances rather thin. In other words, beating Uruguay is a long shot.

For cautious optimists, though, keen to back Costa Rica, the best World Cup pick towards that end would have to be to back them on a draw at +300.

Soccer Free Picks: Uruguay to win outright at -225; 2-1 at +750 or 3-1 at +1400
