Argentina are guaranteed a place in the last 16 after their last gasp winner against Iran, but there’s still something to play for and still something worth betting on when Argentina take on Nigeria on Wednesday night.

Argentina are already safely through, and you might well think that they will take their collective foot off the gas against Nigeria. A draw would be sufficient for Nigeria, to make it through (with Argentina) so we might see a safe and steady game. Bosnia can’t qualify and Iran would need to beat Bosnia (in the other Group F match) and see Nigeria lose to book themselves a place in the last 16. Nigeria may have offered up an unconvincing performance in their goalless draw with Iran when they began their World Cup 2014 campaign last Monday, but this game matters and your Humble Handicapper reckons we’ll see some more fire from them.

Enough with the fire…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
This is as good a time as any to let you know that Argentina winning the World Cup is offered up at best soccer odds of 4/1, joint second favourite with Germany after Brazil, while Nigeria are 250/1.

And if the long term odds don’t tickle you at all you should know that Argentina topping the group on their way through to the last 16 is offered up at 1/11 while Nigeria coming out on top is at 9/1.

Those odds tell you exactly who is the most likely to come out on top in this match.

However, don’t forget Argentina were lucky to take all three points off Iran, and had the “penalty that never was” been given, and the game had ended a couple of minutes earlier then we would be looking at a very different Group F. And don’t forget that Nigeria qualified in some style; unbeaten and five points clear in their group, they also conceded 11 goals - fewer than any other side en route to Brazil.

Nigeria are still 3/19 to qualify, but that has more to do with Iran (the only other side who could qualify) being 6/1 long shots.

Argentina are favourites in this game at best soccer odds of 4/7, the draw is at 3/1 and a Nigeria win is at 7/1. The bookies also like Argentina winning 1-0 and 2-0 at 6/1 and 7/1 respectively, therefore your Humble Handicapper suggests you back Argentina to keep clean sheet at 6/4 as your main soccer pick for this match, and you might even like to have a cheeky bet on Nigeria keeping a clean sheet as it’s 10/1.

I'm not putting any money on Nigeria winning to nil through (even at 14/1) as I see this game ending drawn. And drawn across both halves too, at best soccer odds of 7/5 with BetVictor.
Prediction:  A goalless draw at 17/2 with Stan James.
