Colombia are safely through to the R16 after going undefeated in the first two rounds. However, Los Cafeteros surely have loftier ambitions as top spot is on the line when they take on Japan in the final round of Group C. Will Colombia clinch top spot or will Japan turn the odds in their favour?

Smart Money on Colombia
Colombia currently leads Group C with six points following an undefeated run in group play. They won their opener convincingly, beating a stoic Greece 3-0. Then, they backed up that win with a solid 2-1 victory over a physical and tough Ivory Coast.

From the start of the competition, Colombia were deemed group favourites to win outright. They are a win away from rewarding their early World Cup backers handsomely. Colombia need only a draw to win Group C, which can be backed at -10000. They can still top Group C in defeat, as long as Ivory Coast lose to Greece in the second Group C fixture on the day.

Given Colombia’s inspired run through the rounds, one would assume they’d prefer to finish on a winning note, leave no doubt about their serious intentions in the competition proper, which are rated at rather tempting +140 odds. Given their form thus far, they would seem to be a steal pick at this price.

Dangerous Underdogs Japan
Japan looms dangerous in the last round; they are third in the table, with a shot at advancement into the knockouts, matched at +800. Greece are tipped slightly better at +400, even though they are sat rock bottom in Group C, level on points with Japan but with a worse goal differential of -3.

Japan’s main issue during this competition has been a stale attack; they’ve scored one goal over the span of two matches. Nowhere was this more evident than in their costly draw to Greece. Clearly, offense will need to kick into gear, if they want to have a hope of advancing. The reality is, though, they have no control over their destiny. They need to win, but they also need Ivory Coast to lose to Greece.

World Cup Betting Verdict
Colombia are enjoying verve and swagger in this competition that few expected them to when news of Radamel Falcao’s injury spread. They are proving to be worth their Group C odds to win outright, and are well on their way to proving a tempting dark horse in the outright betting markets. Given their convincing deposit thus far, it would seem remiss not to pounce on their favourable +140 odds to win outright.

Japan’s World Cup campaign hangs on a prayer. Morale is low, offense ineffective and too many variables need to be satisfied in order for them to advance. It remains to be seen how motivated they’ll be in this final clash, but if things aren’t clicking their way, they just might be too frustrated and lacking in confidence to produce the desired result. It’s not impossible to expect Japan to win, but it does seem improbable that they would at the expense of a highly skilled, talented and confident Colombia.
