The World Cup is all about some of the greatest sporting talent on the planet, but when you’re as skilled at picking winning bets as your Humble Handicapper every game, even Cameroon vs. Croatia offers up  the opportunity to win big $$$$$ in Brazil.

Both Cameroon and Croatia got off to a poor start to the 2014 World Cup, as both sides were defeated in their opening games.

Brazil (the host nation) took Croatia down 3-1, despite conceding the first goal. Brazil won the match by a clear 2 goal margin, but Croatia were (rightly) aggrieved by the controversial penalty that gave Brazil the lead, but, then again, that was a foregone conclusion the hosts have never lost an opening game in a world cup. In fact (Pub Bore > alert the 20 previous hosts have won 14 and drew six of their opening games, from the 20 world cups we’ve seen).

In their game Mexico enjoyed 62% of the possession but were outshot by Cameroon 9 attempts to 13, although the shots on target were 4-1 in Mexico’s favour.

Enough with what has already happened…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
The big odds tells us who is most likely to win the World Cup out of Croatia and Cameroon, Cameroon run as high as 2500/1 and Croatia are 200/1. That’s pretty unlikely, but that both these sides would have to qualify ahead of either Brazil, or Mexico, to make it out of the group stages, you can see why the odds are so high.

In fact, Croatia winning the Group is at a big fat 54/1, but Cameroon are 200/1. Croatia are better than Cameroon. Croatia have only conceded 14 goals in 14 World Cup games (an average of one per game) whereas Cameroon have only won one of their last 14 World Cup games.

The basic odds on this match are as follows: Croatia winning is at the shorter end of the scale at 4/6, while a draw is at 11/4, and a Cameroon win is at 5/1. The shortest correct score odds on this game come in at a 1-0 win for Croatia at 5/4. The bookies also like Croatia winning at 2-1, and 2-0 at 7/1 each, before they’d even entertain a win for Cameroon. The shortest odds on the correct score with a Cameroon win are 11/1 at 1-0.

If you’re unsure about who is going to win this one, consider that Croatia winning both halves is at 7/5, while the game being drawn at the 45 and Croatia’s on the 90 is at 7/2. The game being drawn across the board is at 9/2, and Cameroon winning both halves is at 9/1.

The bookies think this will be a close one, and they have the winning margin at a goal in this game at evens, and prefer Croatia winning by one goal at 14/5, compared to Cameroon winning by one at 6/1. However, your Humble Handicapper thinks that this game will offer up a shock, it’s just one of the those things that happen in the World Cup. And he’s backing a draw here with his soccer pick! There’s been scant level matches in the World Cup, thus far, and I think that this of just the sort of game where the two long shots will cancel each other out.

Free World Cup Pick: The game ends honours even 1-1 at best soccer odds of 7/1 with Paddy Power.
