One of the things that World Cup Brazil 2014 has already taught us is that the footballing world is a much smaller place than we had anticipated. Handicapping requires keen eyes and skilled trend-noting. Join us as we find the edge in Algeria vs. Russia.

Teams such as Costa Rica, the USA and Iran have performed much better than expected, often at the expense of more fancied sides. Foremost among that group, though, has to be Algeria. Without a goal, let alone a win, in the World Cup finals since the 1980s, they now find themselves on the brink of qualification for the second round.

To do that, the Algerian World Cup team need to avoid defeat against a Russian side who have looked efficient but uninspired in this tournament. They struggled to draw with the rag-tag rabble that are South Korea, and then managed to be even less impressive than the Belgians in losing their second game. Whilst you would think that they would have too much about them to lose this game, only a win will give them even a sniff of the second round.

The Algerians have in some respects mirrored the Dutch in this tournament, combining a ruthless efficiency in attack with a complete lack of familiarity with the concept of defence. They need to win this game to be sure of that second round slot, but having led at half time in both of their games, then losing the second period to their opponent, you wonder if they have either the stamina or wit to do so.
