We take a look at the betting odds on offer for the 2014 Winter Olympics and turn our focus to the medal counts. Who do we like to lead the way in overall medal count, and which country will likely bring home the most golds?

When it comes to betting the winter Olympics, most bettors only focus on a few main categories: who’ll win the men’s hockey tournament, who’ll win the overall medal count and who’ll take home the most gold. In this article, we’ll take a look at the latter two and handicap who’ll finish best in both categories:

2014 Winter Olympic Betting Cheat Sheet

Most Overall Medals

The Americans are favored to win the medal count and that’s not particularly surprising. They won the overall medal count in 2010, besting second-place Germany.

It’s interesting that we see Norway on this list as they are likely not a very good investment. They’re likely to contend for the most golds (they had the most in2002) but within 10 of the top medal count in any of the last three Olympics. This is a race that’s likely down to the United States and Germany, with Canada maybe having an outside shot at taking it. As confident as the Canadians have been – they’ve said many times they can challenge for the top spot – it’s unlikely that they do it in Sochi. They’re coming off a record-setting performance in Vancouver and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a bit of a letdown.

I think Germany is the best bet here. The time difference (nine hours from the Eastern Time Zone) is going to have a huge effect on these Games and the Germans will be less affected than the Americans. On top of that, you get some sports betting value with Germany even though they’ve won the overall medal count in three of the last four Olympics.

Most Golds

This is a category that’s a little bit tougher to predict. In the last five Olympics, there has been four different winners in this category (Canada, Germany twice, Russia and Norway). Oddly enough, Team USA hasn’t won the gold medal count in a Winter Olympics since 1932, so they may not be the best investment here.

Canada won the most golds in 2010, taking home 14 in a fiery performance in front of their home fans. As mentioned above, I don’t think they can recreate that. Norway is a Winter Olympics powerhouse and with an expansion of events, they’ve become a huge betting odds favorite. They’ve actually been bet down in the last couple of weeks and I’ll follow the smart money there. When you look at the expanded events, it figures to benefit them quite a bit as a number of the categories are ski and snowboard related. They dominate in that realm and that should boost their gold medal count. I expect them to be the gold standard in Sochi.
