Jordan’s WNBA Picks 31-35-1
New York Liberty at Chicago Sky
The Liberty have been on a deep slide down the standings over the last few weeks straddling the All-Star Break. They’ve dropped six of their last seven games SU and now they have to go into Chicago to face a team that they have already lost twice to.
Not only have the Liberty been beaten by the Sky twice, but the Sky also dropped well over 90 points in both those games.
Combine that with the Liberty only averaging 88 points per 100 possessions during that seven-game skid, and you have the Sky as pretty heavy favorites on Wednesday.
However, I’m skeptical of the Sky’s ability to cover the full game spread. Their defense is not great and could be exploited in this one. They also turn the ball over at a pretty good clip. New York and Chicago both have turnover percentages above 19%, which ranks them eighth and ninth in the league.
In the first half, their turnovers get even greater. Combine with paces greater than 100 in the first half as well, and I’m targeting both the over and the Sky in the first half.
Chicago has the worst first-half defense in the league but lately that has been getting better. However, they have vastly different defensive splits when they are home, compared to on the road. Chicago’s defensive rating goes from 113.4 on the road to 94.4 at home.
The good news is their first-half pace jumps to over 101 at home. Combine that with the Liberty allowing 108.2 points per 100 possessions on the road in the first half, and I would not be surprised to see the Sky closer to 50 points than 40 in the first half of this one.
