With Seattle coming in losers in 2 of its L3 and star striker Clint Dempsey suspended, is taking a chance and making a bet on the Home Underdog Union the play here?

Odds Overview
Seattle Sounders at Philadelphia Union [Thursday 00:00] (MLS Live, JOEtv, CSN-Philadelphia (USA): 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT): The Philadelphia Union (4-3-10, 19 GF-30 GA) welcome the Seattle Sounders (9-2-5, 23 GF-13 GA) to PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania—19 miles away from downtown Philadelphia—on Wednesday night in this Week 18 MLS inter-conference affair. Soccer odds makers have surprisingly made the host Union +120 favorites here over the visiting Sounders (+220) with the Draw priced at +240 (bet365). The Total Goals here has been set at 2½, with the Under priced at -125 with the Over juiced at +100 (bet365). Some Props wagers for this mid-week game from the outskirts of the City of Brotherly Love: Both Teams To Score: ‘Yes’ -120, ‘No’ +105 (William Hill); Draw No Bet: Union -137 (Paddy Power, best odds), Sounders +130 (BetVictor, best odds); and, To Win To Nil: Union +320 (Paddy Power, best odds) , Sounders +450 (BetVictor, best odds).

Philadelphia Union
The Philadelphia Union (3-1-4 Home, 8 GF-8 GA), like most teams in the MLS and Soccer in general, have been much better at Home than they have on the Road this season, but the U’s big problem is the Defense and the MLS-high 30 goals allowed, and Brian Sylvestre is the latest GK for the Union (100/1 to win MLS Cup, BetVictor). In its last game on Saturday night in Carson, California, Philadelphia was absolutely blasted 5-1 by the LA Galaxy as the hosts opened up a 2-0 Halftime lead and then poured it on the worst Defensive team in the MLS. Manager Jim Curtin and the Union do possess a fairly solid attack force with CJ Sapong (4 goals), Vincent Nogueira (3 goals), FC-Nantes-loanee Fernando Aristeguieta (3 goals), Sébastien Le Toux (2 goals) and Zad Pfeffer (2 goals), among others, but be aware that the long-distance traveled in playing the Galaxy in Los Angeles by the Union and the relative short rest time between this mid-week game, although the Sounders will also be traveling a great distance, losing 3 hours of of their Body Clocks (Pacific Time to Eastern Time zone) and will also be playing with the short three-days (Sunday-Monday-Tuesday) rest before this game.

Seattle Sounders FC
It’s hard to say that a team like the Seattle Sounders (3-1-3 Away, 10 GF-7 GA), which has had the best overall record in the MLS for the bulk of the season, until this weekend, really need a win at this point in the season, but with 2 Losses in their L3 games (Sporting KC, San Jose), the Sounders could really use one here in Philly—for both their hearts and heads—but without star

striker Clint Dempsey (suspended) and his 7 goals, Seattle will have to look to striker Obafemi Martins (7 goals), Leo Gonzalez (1 goal), Chad Barrett (3 goals), Lamar Neagle (3 goals), Marco Pappa (2 goals), captain Brad Evans and Gonzalo Pineda for Offense, and this team has actually had trouble scoring of late. But with GK Stefan Frei and the league’s best Defense (13 Goals Allowed), the Sounders (+350 to win MLS Cup, BetVictor) are still easily in the league’s elite clubs, but the Red Card Outburst against the Portland Timbers last Tuesday (June 17) in US Open Cup play which left the team with just 7 players on the pitch in the end—and the aforementioned team heartbeat Dempsey suspended—does show that this is a frustrated and emotionally taxed team right now—thus the line with the Union solid favorites. And it showed on Saturday in Seattle’s last game where the Sounders were blanked 2-0 by the visiting San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, despite the Sounders controlling the Time of Possession and controlling the game, except for the final score. That surprisingly happens often in this often quirky sport.

Current Form, Series Trends, Conclusions
Because the Union are relatively new to the MLS, these two teams haven’t played that much. In the 7 times they have met, the Sounders are 3-2-2 (9 GF-9 GA) against Philadelphia but a dismal and winless 0-2-1 (4 GF-6 GA) here at PPL Park. The last time these two teams played, the Sounders (Form: WDWWLWL) defeated the Union (LWWLWLL)—a team with only 3 Draws still—by a 2-1 score in Seattle, while the last time these two played here, it ended 2-2, so the Over and Both Teams To Score (‘Yes’) prop were both winners in those L2 games. Here, expect both Offenses to push the issue, and with Philadelphia averaging a robust 8.25 Shots On Goal (heading into weekend play) and 1.13 Goals Per Game and Seattle averaging and even more impressive 8.27 Shots Per Game and 1.53 Goals Per Game, it seems both teams should be able to muster a goal here but getting that second one for either in this situation is a tough call as is this handicap. This seems like one to maybe take a small shot on the Sounders ‘Draw No Bet’ (+130, BetVictor) for your soccer pick and maybe the Under in if you have to have action on it, but there will be better games to gamble on this week than this.

Predicted Final Score: Philadelphia Union 1 Seattle Sounders 1

MLS Soccer Pick: Under 2½ -125 at Bet365, Sounders Draw No Bet +130 (BetVictor)
