Everton are on the brink of qualification into the R16 after routing the Young Boys in Switzerland last week. By the soccer odds, the second leg appears to be a mere formality.

Everton All But Through To R16
Everton are all but through to R16 after taking a 4-1 win in the first leg of their tie with the Young Boys. They'll look to finish the job at Goodison Park this week and if the soccer odds were any indication, they should accomplish the feat comfortably.

Roberto Martinez and his Toffees got off to a bright start in Bern, Switzerland. Although the hosts opened the scoring, Everton's prize striker Romelu Lukaku levelled the score with the first of his hattrick less than 15 minutes later and the Toffees never looked back.

It's no surprise, therefore, Everton are trading at -143 to win outright at Goodison Park on Thursday and at throw away -25000 future odds to advance into the R16. Clearly, betting on this game is not a matter of which side will win, but rather in what manner the Toffees are going to advance. Will they continue on their verve and swagger and qualify with a big bang in front on Everton's faithful, or will they relax the foot on the pedal and cruise into the next round, doing only the minimum required?

Erasing a three-goal deficit (four-away goal advantage) is going to be a tall order for the Young Boys, if not impossible. It was a spectacularly unexpected collapse by the Swiss at the Stade de Suisse, where they boasted a solid home record until Everton's arrival. Putting the painful experience behind them is not going to be easy, but also avoiding another such humiliation in the second leg is going to be the challenge.

The Young Boys have nothing but pride to play for and one hopes that at least will deliver a competitive game on Thursday that soccer bettors can sink their teeth into. Last weekend, immediately after they were left to pick up the shreds of their UEFA Europa League campaign off the pitch, they beat Swiss league-leaders Basel 4-2. That outcome may seem like small validation in the broad spectrum of Europe's competition, but it could do wonders for their confidence going into the second leg. The Young Boys can be backed at +450 soccer odds for the improbable win.

Soccer Betting Verdict
It remains to be seen what sort of starting XI Roberto Martinez fields for this game. Theoretically, Everton have the tie in the bag, but Martinez will not want to weaken his side to the point that it would give the Young Boys a chance to get back into it. That would be madness. The Young Boys need four goals in Goodison Park at the very least. High tally, though, it is, they showed at the weekend that they are more than capable of scoring in bunches. So they shouldn't be underestimated.

If Everton play to win this game, they should come through for backers as the -143 faves on their soccer picks. Young Boys definitely strike a tempting pose as the +450 underdogs, for a win that could salvage their pride but not be enough to send them through to the next round on aggregate. It's a risky bet though, best left for the bold soccer bettor. For our money, the safest soccer picks are to back the Over 2.5 at -118 and both teams to score at -120.
