When you think of Rangers veteran pitcher Yovani Gallardo, you probably don’t conjure up a guy you want to regularly back at Intertops. But you should.

The Texas Rangers are a bad team in 2018. They are going to finish well under .500 and last in the AL West for the first time since 2014. More often than not, you shouldn’t be backing the Rangers on your daily MLB bets at Intertops.

However, once every five days or so, bettors should wager on the Rangers regardless of opponent while also betting the total to go ‘over’ no matter the number. Why? Yovani Gallardo.

Gallardo is a 32-year-old well past his prime. He was awful in 2016 with Baltimore, going 6-8 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.58 WHIP – a WAR of 0.2. The next season in Seattle, Gallardo was worse with a 5-10 record, 5.72 ERA and 1.52 WHIP, good for a negative-0.2 WAR.

This year, Gallardo began it with the Cincinnati Reds and had a whopping 30.86 ERA and 5.14 WHIP (minus-0.4 WAR) in three relief appearances before he was released in mid-April. Gallardo signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers (his last good year was with Texas in 2015). He pitched at Triple-A Round Rock for two months and finally returned to the majors on June 17. Since then, the right-hander has been money in the bank at Intertops.

On Thursday, Gallardo allowed two runs and three hits over six innings in an 11-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners. It was his fourth straight win, and shockingly he leads the majors with seven victories since June 23. It’s not like Gallardo has been that great. With Texas, his ERA is 4.97 in nine starts, but he’s 7-1 personally because no pitcher with multiple starts in the majors this year gets more than Gallardo’s average of 9.78 runs of support per game.

Texas has scored in double digits in four of his starts: Those 11 runs on Thursday vs. Seattle, 11 in a win in Houston on July 27, 11 on June 29 in a victory over the White Sox, and 13 in a one-run win over the Rockies on June 17. Gallardo’s only loss with the Rangers was July 10 in Boston when he allowed six runs in five innings. The Red Sox beat everyone, though.

Overall, Gallardo has been worth +$951 Intertops money units on the season, a Top 5 number in all of baseball. YOVANI GALLARDO! Even better, eight of his nine starts have gone ‘over’ the total. The only one that didn’t was a 5-0 win July 22 in Cleveland when Gallardo shut out the Tribe on three hits over six.

When is your next chance to cash in at Intertops on Gallardo? Barring any rainouts, he’s projected to take the mound Tuesday at home vs. Arizona, a team he hasn’t faced this season and which will add an extra bat with the designated hitter. In his career, Gallardo is an excellent 7-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 13 career starts vs. the Diamondbacks, but needless to say most of those came in his heyday. A couple of Arizona batters hit him well: Paul Goldschmidt is 6-for-12 with a double a and three RBIs, and Jon Jay is a .303 batter with two homers in 33 at-bats off Gallardo. It’s quite likely that Gallardo is an Intertops underdog in that game, so go fetch!
