Today's game between Mariners and Yankees could be crucial, while Seattle is in the thick of it, NY is hanging on by a thread. The pitching duel today presents an appealing scenario on the MLB Odds.

MLB odds have set this total at 7.5 at most places. For my MLB pick, I'm going to back under the total of 7.5 like at Heritage sports -115. Both pitchers have solid numbers in this particular situation which leads me to believe they will come out and produce two good starts.

New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound for New York and comes in this season with a 3.24 ERA and 1.07 whip but just a 2.28 ERA on the road. On top of the fact that he has been pitching well on the road, this season is that he is coming off of one of his best starts allowing zero earned runs off of five hits in over seven innings of work against the Angels. As well, he pitched decently against Seattle earlier this season and overall in his past three years he has been very tough against the Mariners. Prior to this season, Tanaka posts a 2.35 ERA versus Seattle going 3-0, and that ERA actually gets better in Seattle where he posts a 1.69 ERA and two starts. With his last start combined with how well he's pitched against the Mariners overall in his career, I expect him to come out and be solid today.

At the plate, New York has some new blood in their lineup but for the most part, they rank in the bottom of the league in most offensive categories. The Yankees have struggled this season and currently they rank 20th in batting average, 23rd in runs scored per game, and 25th in OPS. In their last few games, they have shown a bit of life at the plate but they have also shown a propensity to struggle like getting shut out the other night in Los Angeles.

Seattle Mariners
Hisashi Iwakuma comes in for the Mariners with a 3.70 ERA and 1.27 whip while having a 3.48 ERA at home going 8-2 in Seattle. In his only opportunity to face the Yankees this season he did not pitch very well allowing four earned runs off of eight hits in just seven innings. However, like Tanaka versus the Mariners, his numbers versus New York the past few seasons have been good with a 3.15 ERA going 2-1 versus the Yankees. At home, he is a much better pitcher and is currently on a nice streak at home allowing zero earned runs in his last three starts in Seattle. Mind you those were not against any cupcakes either as he had to face Houston, Boston, and Detroit in that span. I fully expect for him to get a quality start today. Seattle has turned things around from last year and statistically are one of the better hitting teams in baseball. They rank seventh and eighth in OPS and runs scored per game respectively.

They have also been swinging the bats decently well their last 10 games. Although I do expect them to score because of their past difficulties against Tanaka I expect the damage will be minimal enough to help stay under the total.
