Ross Benjamin breaks down Sunday’s series finale between the Yankees and Orioles. How can the Yankees avoid the embarrassment of a 3-game sweep against their AL East rival?

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

A couple of AL East rivals complete a 3-game weekend series on Sunday when the Orioles and Yankees go at it. The opening pitch at Camden Yards in Baltimore is slated for 1:35 PM ET. At the time of this writing (4/8), MLB betting odds shows New York ranging from +100 to -110 on the money line. Conversely, Baltimore is anywhere from -105 to -110. Additionally, the posted total on this game is 8.5 across the board.

Baltimore won the first 2 games of this series by overcoming 5-1 and 4-1 deficits, and walked away with 1-run victories on both occasions. Dating back to last season, Baltimore is now 12-9 in this head to head series, and 13 of those 21 games stayed under the total. Furthermore, Baltimore is 8-3 at home during that exact time frame, and 7 of the 11 played at Camden Yards went under the total.

 Probable Starting Pitchers

C.C. Sabathia is scheduled to make his 2nd start of the season on Sunday. Manager Joe Girardi was certainly pleased with his season debut versus Tampa Bay. Sabathia tossed 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball in that outing, allowed only 3 hits while walking just 2 in a 5-0 Yankees win. Sabathia saw all 5 of his starts against Baltimore go under the total last season. The veteran southpaw was a major contributor to those low scoring games by posting an outstanding 2.30 ERA. As a matter of fact, 3 of the starts came at Camden Yards, and Sabathia compiled a microscopic 0.50 ERA during those outings.

The Orioles are slated to go with a veteran left-hander of their own in Wade Miley. He’ll be making his first start of the season on Sunday. Miley made 3 starts against the Yankees in 2016, and displayed bad form during those appearances, evidenced by his 6.19 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Miley was also shaky in 5 Grapefruit League starts during spring training, posting a lofty 5.54 ERA and 1.85 WHIP.

Closing Analysis and Pick

Based on each starting pitcher’s recent history against the teams they’ll be facing on Sunday, it’s obvious New York has a sizable edge in that regard. There’s no sense overthinking the process. My lean is toward the “Bronx Bombers”, and one of my Sunday MLB predictions will be indicative of just that. Although it’s extremely early, the Yankees will desperately attempt to avoid being swept.
