The Giants were broomed out of Cincinnati and outscored 31-5 over the weekend, and they're big underdogs on the MLB odds Monday when they open a series at the Mets.

MLB Season Record: 11-21 (-11.48)

For the first five weeks, the New York Mets have been touring exclusively through their own NL East division. They've played the Marlins and Braves three times each, plus the Nationals and Phillies twice apiece, struggling to a 14-16 record due in part to a long list of injuries.

There are recent signs the Mets are coming around, however, as they prepare to face their first opponent outside the NL East when the disappointing San Francisco Giants come to Citi Field for three games beginning Monday night. ESPN's broadcast is at 7 PM (ET), Jacob deGrom's first pitch for New York coming 10 minutes later with Matt Moore getting the call for San Francisco. 5Dimes has the Mets -160 on the money line, 7½ with an 'under' lean for the total.

Citi Field & deGrom Go Well Together

San Francisco completes a 9-game road trip with this stop, a trip that started well by taking two of three in Los Angeles before being swept in Cincinnati to fall to 11-21 on the year. The problems have been equally shared between an offense that ranks last in the NL scoring at 3.39 runs per game and a pitching staff that is second from last in the Senior Circuit with a 4.88 ERA. The club has lost Moore's last four assignments, only one of them a quality start, and his ERA has ballooned more than four runs during the stretch. The Dodgers chased him in LA just an out into the fourth last Tuesday, Moore charged with nine runs in San Fran's 13-5 loss as +160 road 'dogs on the MLB odds.

DeGrom is coming off his worst effort of the season at Atlanta (5 IP, 5 ER), though New York's lineup provided plenty of support to get him his second consecutive win. The 28-year-old has always been a better pitcher at home than on the road, owning a sub-2.00 ERA in more than 250 innings at Citi Field. DeGrom has also enjoyed decent success vs. the Giants, winning three of his four career starts while pitching to a 3.42 ERA.

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The Giants have made a habit of sending Mets fans home from Citi Field unhappy since the park opened for the '09 season, beating the New Yorkers 16 of the 27 games played on this diamond. The Mets did win two of three from San Fran last year, their first home series victory in the rivalry since 2010 (Giants won the wild-card game there, though). The last five games played here went 'over' the totals.

Weather shouldn't interfere with this series, Monday's forecast calling for partly cloudy skies, 55º and a light WNW breeze (left to right) at game time. Both sides were shut out Sunday, but the Mets had been raking before that and with deGrom on the bump, my free baseball pick is a run line play.
