The Detroit Tigers have been playing really good baseball heading in here and with Michael Fulmer starting and an 8-0 mark the L8 against the AL West, this seems like a fairly tough spot for the Seattle Mariners. Let’s look at the Game 1 of the series and provide a side pick for our devout MLB readership.

Detroit Tigers vs Seattle Mariners
The Detroit Tigers (61-50) and RHP Michael Fulmer (9-2) head west to Safeco Field in Seattle on Monday night to face RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (12-7) and the host Seattle Mariners (57-53) in Game 1 of this 3-game series. Offshore sportsbooks opened up the Tigers up as slight -108 Road favorites (at Heritage) with the Mariners slim -102 underdogs but early money now has Seattle (-105) the smallest of chalks over Detroit (-103) and the Tigers can currently be found at Even money (+100) at one Offshore (5Dimes).

The Total (Runs) in the game opened up at 8 (Under -115, Heritage) while the Run Line MLB odds had Detroit -1½ priced at +145 with Seattle +1½ runs priced at a very lofty -165 (Heritage). The scheduled Probable starters for Game 2 are Daniel Norris (1-0) for the Tigers with the Mariners Probable Starter yet to be named while the two scheduled Starting Pitchers for Game 3 in this series on Wednesday night (10:10 p.m. EDT/7:10 a.m. PDT) are veteran ace RHP Justin Verlander (12-6) for the Tigers and veteran ace RHP Félix Hernández (6-4) for for the Mariners.

Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers (35/1 to win World Series, Bwin) and Manager Brad Ausmus have W3 of 4 and 10 of their L12 as they embark on this Road trip and this team has been winning in both low- and high-scoring games through this stretch winning 4 of the L7 heading into Sunday by 1 Run and 6 of the 9 Wins in that stretch by 1 Run. This speaks volumes about intestinal fortitude, streaks and maybe more than anything about Detroit’s Relief Pitching. And after play on Sunday, Detroit sat just 2 games behind AL Central leaders Cleveland (62-47) in what suddenly is a tight and exciting divisional race after the Indians had gone on a winning tear and put some distance between themselves and the Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox.

On Sunday afternoon, Detroit (530 RF-508 RA) lost, 3-1 thanks to a 2-run HR by Neil Walker in the Top of the 9th in Motown as the Mets avoided the series Sweep. In the setback, Detroit Manager Ausmus had a Starting Lineup of: CF Tyler Collins, SS José Iglesias, 1B Miguel Cabrera, DH Victor Martínez, RF JD Martínez, LF Justin Upton, 3B Casey McGehee, C James McCann, 2B Andrew Romine with RHP Anibal Sanchez getting the start for the Tigers against Jacob DeGrom. And Sanchez pitched great, allowing just 1 Run (Earned) on 4 Hits in 8.0 IPP. The two Martínezes had 2 Hits each for Detroit while Ian Kinsler went 2-for-2 after coming and getting a 2-out, RBI Pinch Hit and then staying in at 2B and then getting another Hit his next AB. Value. The Tigers (62-48 on Run Line) are 28-29 on the Road heading in here.

Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners (66/1 to win World Series, at William Hill) and Manager Scott Servais have W3 in a row now after getting a great Pitching performance from Starter James Paxton (4-5) in 3-1 Win on Sunday at Home at Safeco Field over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Patterson went 8.1 IP, allowed 5 Hits and 1 Unearned Run and struck out 6 in the win as Seattle swept the 3-game series, outscoring the Halos 17-11 in the process. In the victory on Sunday, M’s Manager Servais had a Starting Lineup of: LF Norichika Aoki, RF Seth Smith, 3B Kyle Seager, DH Nelson Cruz, CF Leonys Martin, C Mike Zunino, 2B Mike Freeman and SS Shawn O’Malley.

Seager and Freeman both had 2 Singles for the Mariners (18/1 to win AL West, Coral) will start play on Monday 7 games behind the AL West-leading Texas Rangers (65-47). And with its 3-1 win, Seattle leap-frogged the Houston Astros (57-54)—who lost their 8th game in the L11 on Sunday—into 2nd place in the AL West. Seattle (511 RF-475 RA) will still have to improve on its Home Record (30-25) if it wants to make the Postseason this year and this is a tough scheduling spot for the hosts. The Mariners have now gone from a 52-52 Record on Aug. 1 to its current 4 games over .500 and has three 1-run and three 2 run Wins over that span, all played in Seattle.

Starting Pitchers Report Card
Tigers RHP Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.42 ERA, 88 K’s, 1.08 WHIP) has absolutely brilliant numbers, especially in the AL where Starting Pitchers must face the DH every trip around the batting order and where the average Runs Per Game (rpg) is almost always higher than over in the National League. In his last game against Seattle, the big (6-2, 210) 23-year-old threw 4.1 IP of one-hit baseball before allowing back-to-back HBPs.

Lee (1-2) and Seth Smith (1-2) are the only Mariners (57-52 Run Line) Batters with Hits against Fullmer, so with his (Fulmer’s) team playing well and a miniscule 1.08 WHIP, the pitching edge here has to go to Detroit no matter the Site or how well Seattle RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (12-7, 3.99 ERA, 103 K’s, 1.29 WHIP) has been doing this MLB Regular Season. And lifetime against the big (6-3, 210) RHP Iwakuma, some Tigers have fared pretty well with Cabrera (.400, 2 HR, 3 RBI), Iglesias (.462), Saltalamacchia (.500, 5-10), Kinsler (.375, 3 HR, 3 RBI), McCann (.333) and Austin Romine (.333) all having decent success against the Tokyo, Japan native. However, Iwakuma (2.40 ERA L5 Starts) is coming off one of his best starts of the season, hurling 7.1 IP of shutout ball against the Boston Red Sox, so expect him to be at his best.

Trend-wise for these two Starters, Detroit is 4-0 in Fullmer’s L4 Road starts, 4-0 after a Quality Start by the Oklahoma City native, 4-0 the L4 Fullmer Start vs. a team with a Winning Record and the Tigers are an impressive 14-2 in Fullmer’s L16 Starts on Grass. Seattle is 18-6 in the L24 Starts by Iwakuma vs. the AL Central, 21-7 in his L28 Home Starts against a team with a Winning Record, 4-1 in his L5 Starts with 4 Days of rest and Seattle is 5-1 both the L6 Game 1 Starts by Iwakuma as well as his L6 Starts on Grass. So, this could be a Pitcher’s duel.

Seattle Weather Forecast and Side, Total and Team Trends
The Weather Channel Forecast for Seattle on Monday night is currently calling for Mostly Cloudy conditions, a stray Shower or Thunderstorms possible with a Low (Fahrenheit) temperature of 58°, S Winds of 4 mph with 80% Humidity. So, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest possibly living up to its stereotype. And there are many Trends that support backing Detroit in this spot: The Tigers are a powerful 8-0 their L8 against the AL West, 7-0 their L7 Game 1’s of a series, 6-0 their L6 against a RHP Starter, 10-1 their L11 overall and 4-0 the L4 meetings against these Mariners.

Detroit is also 10-1 its L11 against a team with a Winning Record, 10-1 its L11 on Grass (Safeco Field) and 5-2 in their L7 Road games. And when Fullmer starts, the Tigers are 15-2 over their L17, so it’s easy to see who the new Pitching ace of this staff is and who can stop a losing streak when his turn in the Rotation comes up. The Mariners are 6-1 in their L7 vs a RHP Starter, 8-2 their L10 at Home at Safeco Field against a RHP Starter and Seattle is 4-1 in its L5 games played on Grass. But the Mariners are just 6-13 against the AL Central this season and 0-5 in the L5 Monday Starts by Iwakuma.

Some Totals Trends: The Under is 8-2-1 the L11 Detroit Road dates, the Over is 9-4 the L13 Tigers Monday games, the Under is 11-5 the L16 Tigers games against a RHP Starter and the Under is 4-1 the L5 meetings in this series. So the five biggest Trends here that make the Tigers the easy MLB pick are Detroit’s 10-2 mark over its L12, the Tigers 7-0 mark the L7 Game 1’s of a series, Detroit’s 8-0 record the L8 against the AL West, its 4-0 record the L4 meetings in this series and the fact that the Tigers are 15-2 in the L17 Fullmer starts. That’s some strong stuff.
