Here we are approaching mid-June with the Brewers and Diamondbacks still very much in their division races. Join us for a preview and free MLB pick in their series opener.

MLB Season Record: 28-36 (-8.43)

Count me among the many who never expected this weekend’s series in Arizona between the Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers to be a battle between playoff contenders. The set lifts off with a 9:40 PM (ET) start at Chase Field, Zach Davies and Randall Delgado the initial mound duel. The morning line at 5Dimes has Arizona -139 with 9½ for the total.

Sure, there’s a lot of baseball left in 2017, but the Brewers and Diamondbacks are still insisting they’re October players. Milwaukee holds a slim 1-game lead atop the NL Central while Arizona has won 3 straight to hang just two behind Colorado out West.

Brewers Hit Road With Cubs Nipping At Their Heels

Davies has been getting plenty of support from the Milwaukee lineup this season, the Brewers averaging about 5½ runs per game when he pitches compared to just under five overall. The bats did not step up for him, however, when he faced the Snakes in Milwaukee on May 25, Arizona’s Robbie Ray combining with two relievers for a 4-0 shutout in a game that closed around a pick ‘em on the MLB odds. Davies went six in that game and allowed three runs, two of them coming plateward on solo homers. The loss left him level against Milwaukee with a 1-1 record and ERA just under 3.00 in two assignments.

Delgado is making his fourth consecutive start after his first 15 appearances of 2017 were from the bullpen. The Panamanian has surrendered just one earned run in each of the previous three assignments that totaled 15 frames, striking out 15 and walking just two in those outings. He missed the Brew Crew on their diamond a couple of weeks ago, his last eight times to face them coming as a reliever (10.2 IP, 5 ER, 1 save). Only a few Milwaukee hitters have any experience against Delgado, Friday his first start in the rivalry since 2013.

Rivalry Info, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

It’s hard to find a more even series in the big leagues; in fact, you can’t with the rivalry a level 68-68 after the Brewers and D-Backs split that earlier set in Milwaukee. Both sides also have a 35-33 road record against each other, though Arizona has won five of the last seven in Phoenix. Three of the four matchups at Miller Park in May stayed ‘under’ the totals, and four of the last six here in the desert also failed to reach the marks.

With the thermometer still in the upper 90s, perhaps even triple digits, at game time the roof will be closed at Chase Field. With Arizona’s offense clicking, my free baseball pick will be a run line play on the Snakes.
