Can the Athletics sweep their way past the Angels on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and into 1st-place in the AL West?  The MLB odds say yes, and our handicapper says...

What was once looking to be a huge road trip for the Los Angeles Angels has taken a hard turn south in Oakland this weekend. The Athletics won their second straight in the set on Saturday, an 8th-inning run on a wild pitch proving the difference in a 2-1 final, pulling them even with the Angels in the AL West and on the verge of a sweep in tonight's prime-time series finale..

Game No. 129 of the 2014 MLB betting schedule for both clubs will get the Sunday Night Baseball treatment from ESPN (8 PM ET). SBR's live baseball odds has yet to pick the game up for some reason, but a quick check of a few sports books shows Oakland running in the -145 to -150 price range behind lefthander Scott Kazmir. The Angels send Jered Weaver out in opposition.

Can A's Get To Weaver A Third Time?
The Angels are 17-10 this year when Weaver takes his turn in manager Mike Scioscia's rotation, good enough for a little more than four units of black ink. But two of those 10 setbacks came at the hands of the A's back in June, the lanky righthander taking it on the chin both times with a total of 10 runs (9 earned) scoring in a combined 11.1 innings.

Weaver's last 12 assignments have seen LA find the win column 10 times, the most recent a 4-3 triumph in Boston this past Tuesday.  He no-decisioned in that matchup, working into the sixth and surrendering three runs along with four walks.

Kazmir is enjoying his finest season to date, the southpaw among the AL's top 10 in ERA and wins with 14. The A's are 18-7 (+7.3 units) in his 25 trips to the hill, but have been alternating wins and losses in his six post-ASG starts. This will be Kazmir's first go at the Halos this year, and he hopes for better results against his former team that the one time he saw them in 2013 while with the Indians (3 IP, 5 ER).

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
Mike Everitt, who has in the past exhibited a quick thumb for managers and players who dare to question his verdicts on the field, is in line to call balls and strikes in Game 3. The Gallup, NM native umpire has also shown a tendency for higher-scoring games than the oddsmakers believe this season, 10 of his 15 plate assignments going past closing totals.

Bettors should take note of the forecast for Sunday evening's game, which begins a little after five o'clock local time. The clear skies and mid-60s thermometer reading at first pitch are obviously nothing to be concerned with, but the weatherman is predicting 10-14 mph winds from the west that could assist balls heading out to right field.

Saturday's pitching duel between CJ Wilson and Jon Lester exceeded my expectations, but I don't expect that tonight. The A's have the momentum, but I'm backing the lineups instead with my free pick in Game 3.
