With the regular season winding down and the playoff chase really heating up, we are trying to hone in on which teams have a real chance to win the World Series this October.

Seemingly every year when we watch the Fall Classic, the announcers end up bringing up the point Team A or Team B has been playing since -- fill in the date -- and has an outstanding record in that span.

With this in mind, we will present what has been going on since Aug. 1 for all potential teams that could make the postseason and their current MLB odds to win the World Series along with a few thoughts. Let's start in the National League. Odds courtesy of 5Dimes.

We fudged the Dodgers a bit since they have been in this horrendous slump since Aug. 26. No need to panic yet on Los Angeles as long as it starts winning again pretty quickly or the Dodgers could lose their confidence. The 2005 Chicago White Sox went through something similar when they had a nasty September stretch before getting hot the last week of the season and going on to win the World Series.

Washington has been steady and is real threat with an improved bullpen and Bryce Harper (presumably) coming back. If the Diamondbacks can stay sizzling, they could turn into this year's version of the 2009 Rockies.

St. Louis is coming on and is a threat to both the Cubs and Colorado, and the Cards have seven games remaining with Chicago. Milwaukee looks to be fading and the Rockies are playing like they are out of gas and might not earn a Wild Card spot after all after being a sure thing just a month ago.

Odds to Win  W.S.

Houston

11-17

6-0

430

Cleveland

19-9

7-0

600

The Astros went through a messy August, but look to have gotten back in track. However, at this moment, nobody has been as good as Cleveland over an extended period of time and the Indians might the team to wager on for MLB picks to return to the World Series and close the deal this time. Everything is working for the Tribe.

Boston still controls its fate in the AL East and looks to be in good shape to make the playoffs; nonetheless, the Red Sox are not in good form and have cheating investigation over their heads.

The Yankees can still win their division and have a small lead to host the Wild Card game. No doubt New York wants to avoid a one-game crapshoot, but with no remaining games against Boston, that will not be easy.

Hats off to Minnesota and Los Angeles. Neither team had any expectations coming into the year, yet at this time it appears they will go down to the wire and one will make the Wild Card clash. If the Twins and or Angels were to falter, Baltimore or Texas would seem poised to take their place based on how they have been coming on.

At this time, the World Series looks like a four-team race with the Dodgers, Nationals, Astros and Indians -- and possibly three other clubs able to get hot and make a run.
