The Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox meet up today in Cleveland to finish up their three-game series. We’re going to look at the total for this matchup. Will we see more runs when Josh Tomlin takes on Miguel Gonzalez?

Chicago White Sox

Gonzalez comes in for the White Sox with a 3.00 ERA after having a decent start of the season in one outing beating Minnesota 6-2. He will most likely have a little bit more trouble today considering his numbers versus Cleveland last season were not very good allowing seven earned runs and 14 hits over just 11 innings pitched for 5.73 ERA. More alarming than that though is the fact that the Tribe is hitting .304 against him.

At the plate, Chicago has been less than stellar hitting just .226 as a team but they have had a little tough luck in grounding into double plays and not scoring guys when given the opportunity. Still, they do rank right in the middle league in batting average on balls in play and they have a decent enough lineup to have some good quality at-bats today. I don’t expect for them to struggle as much at the plate as they did yesterday, only plating a couple, so I anticipate more than that with a few runs at least to help get over this total.

Cleveland Indians

Tomlin definitely did not have a good start of the season getting knocked around against Arizona, one of the better hitting teams in the National League. I do expect for him to bounce back a little bit today and his numbers versus Chicago last year were solid with a 1.83 ERA in 19 innings pitched. However, his numbers at home were less than stellar as batters hit .283 against him last season so I don’t expect for him to get out of this game unscathed.

Cleveland has really been struggling the season hitting just .220 as a team which ranks 23rd in the major leagues. However, it is still very early in the season and this team usually puts up some good quality at-bats ranking in the top five in the major leagues in both walks per game and strikeouts. They’ve had some solid success versus Gonzalez so I expect for them to do a lot more damage than they did yesterday at the plate.

CH White Sox vs Cleveland Indians

Oddsmakers have come out with a pretty high total for this game at 8.5 but for my MLB pick, I’m going to back over the total and look for Cleveland to have a big day at the plate supplemented by Chicago putting up their share. Cleveland is just too talented offensively to struggle for long stretches of time so there also might be a little bit of value on backing them on the run line.
