This has already been a year to forget for the New York Mets. But they’ve started beating the baseball odds again, and they’ve got the Milwaukee Brewers next on the menu Friday. All eyes will be on Mets pitcher Matt Harvey in Beer Town.

It was almost two weeks ago when we last checked in on the New York Mets, and things were not looking good at all. The Mets were slumping for the most part, they were riddled with injuries and they were an easy fade against the Washington Nationals (+100 away on the closing line). The Nationals won that game 23-5.

The injury situation has only gotten worse since then, especially with the starting rotation. And if that weren’t enough, Matt Harvey went AWOL on May 6 and was suspended three games without pay. Harvey will be on the mound – in theory – when the Mets visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday (8:10 p.m. ET, WPIX). This game has opened as a pick ‘em on the MLB odds board, with each team priced at -104 on the moneyline. No surprise, the early action has been on the Brewers, moving them to -111.

Harvey Danger

Calling the Harvey situation “bizarre” is not doing it justice. In fact, if rumors are to be believed, it’s all too human. He didn’t show up at Citi Field for Saturday’s game against the Miami Marlins (it wasn’t his turn in the rotation), and according to Page Six of the New York Post, it’s because Harvey went on a bender the night before after he saw photos of supermodel Adriana Lima attending the Met Gala with New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. It’s complicated, but Harvey obviously thought Lima was his girl.

Let me get this straight...the #Mets suspended Matt Harvey for being out late at night and then lying about his whereabouts!? pic.twitter.com/jICmmc1C7U

Anyway, Harvey (5.77 FIP) is back now, but is he there in mind and spirit? The Mets need him more than ever, because closer Jeurys Familia (3.45 FIP) has just been diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder. Good gravy. New York can’t even count on Matt Garza (3.31 FIP) to screw this up for Milwaukee – he’s been pitching like the Garza of old. The Mets may be 6-3 since getting thumped by Washington, but for this particular game we’re recommending Milwaukee for your MLB picks, and it’s not a terribly difficult choice under the circumstances.
