Since we've got such an early start this Wednesday, we're going to focus our MLB picks of the day on the later baseball slate Let's get to it!
Washington Nationals (Scherzer) vs. Chicago Cubs (Lester)
After winning in thrilling fashion yesterday, the Cubs will be hoping to keep momentum high with a win to close out this series. Despite the wind blowing out in both games, we haven't seen much offense at all at Wrigley, as the pitching has won out over all else.
It's interesting to see a low total of 6.5 runs on the board, despite these two great pitchers in Max Scherzer and Jon Lester taking the bump. After all, we saw totals north of 10 in each of the first two games of the series, and it's not like they were bad starters on the schedule. However, here it appears as if MLB odds makers have adjusted accordingly.
Scherzer has been as advertised for Washington so far, going 5-3 with a 1.67 ERA and 0.88 WHIP through his first nine starts of the season. He has a 72:9 K:BB ratio over 64 and 2/3 innings of work, so the Cubs are certainly going to face a tall task when they run into the dominant righty tonight.
Chicago will put the ball in the glove of Lester, who's gone 4-2 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. He was shaky to start the year but has really found his groove here as of late -- in five May starts he's gone 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA, so he'll enter tonight's game full of confidence too. You can see why the total is so low in this spot.
So who do we choose between in the Windy City? We're actually going to roll with Scherzer in this spot, as it's rare to get the chance to back a pitcher of his caliber at such an attractive price. Scherzer should rack up the strikeouts against the swing-happy Cubs, and we think Bryce Harper and company will be able to find just enough success against Lester.

Atlanta Braves (Wood) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (Greinke)
The Dodgers just keep chuggling along, as they've now won four of their last five games to improve to 28-17 on the season. They got a dominant performance out of ace Clayton Kershaw yesterday, and have to feel good about their chances again tonight with Zack Greinke taking the bump.
Greinke and the Dodgers are listed at near -200 to get another win this evening, though there's a lot more value if you're willing to take a risk on the run-line. As for the total, that can be found at 6.5 runs.
It should be a pitcher's duel here tonight, as Greinke has been pitching exceptionally well, while Alex Wood appears to be turning the corner as well. Greinke is 5-1 with a 1.48 ERA and 0.87 WHIP, which are simply outstanding numbers, and there's little reason to expect anything to change against the punchless Braves offense.
As for Wood, he wasn't at his best to start the season, but he's been rounding into form as of late. He had to skip his latest start because of a stomach virus, but in his latest start just over 10 days ago he held the Marlins to seven hits and one earned run over seven innings in a 5-3 victory. Wood's now 2-2 with a 3.83 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.
But while Wood has been pitching better, we have to keep rolling with the Dodgers while they're playing this well. Greinke has been as good as any pitcher out there so far this season and gets another dream matchup here, and we think the Los Angeles bats can do enough damage to lead them to a win by at least two runs. We're taking the Dodgers on the run-line.
MLB Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (+125) at 5Dimes
