SBR contributor Ross Benjamin previews Monday’s MLB opening day game between the Tigers and White Sox. Due to inclement weather conditions being forecasted in Chicago, we advise reading on before making any kind of move on this game.

Detroit Tigers At Chicago White Sox (+110, 7.5)

The Chicago White Sox will host the Detroit Tigers in their home opener today. The first pitch at Guaranteed Rate Field is slated for 4:10 PM ET. The Tigers won 12 of the 19 games played between these teams a season ago. At the time of this writing, MLB betting odds indicated that Detroit was a money line favorite of anywhere from -120 to -125, and there’s a posted total of 7.5.

Gloomy Weather Report

It’s a distinct possibility that this game will be rained out, per local weather reports. The weather forecast in Chicago predicts an 85-95 percent chance of rain between 1-5 PM ET, and then more periodic precipitation is expected throughout the evening.

Starting Pitchers

Veteran right-hander Justin Verlander is scheduled to make the start for Detroit. After a very rough beginning to 2016, Verlander rebounded and finished with a stellar 3.04 ERA in 34 starts. Nevertheless, it should be noted, during his first 6 starts last year Verlander compiled a lofty 6.49 ERA and allowed 7 home runs in 34 2/3 innings. Detroit was 3-0 last season against the White Sox when Verlander was its starter and his sparkling 2.57 ERA was a major reason why.

The White Sox will go with southpaw Jose Quintana. This will be his first0ever opening day start. With Chris Sale now with the Boston Red Sox, Quintana is expected to be the White Sox ace. He hopes for the kind of start to the season he enjoyed in 2016. During his first 8 starts last year, Quintana compiled a superb 1.54 ERA and allowed just 1 home run in 51 2/3 innings of work. Quintana had a 4.26 ERA in 4 starts against Detroit in 2016.

Final Take

Whenever I see inclement weather predictions like we’re seeing in Chicago for Monday, I steer clear of making any MLB picks on those games. I’m not about to stray from that practice today. It’s a long season, and with so much uncertainty regarding the weather my advice is to look at other games on Monday’s MLB card that can provide you with much better betting value.
