If this were a boxing match or MMA fight, this would be considered a likely first round knockout. But it's not and those betting baseball have ponder if the Mets can rise up against Washington.

New York has lost 10 of 11, six in a row, which included being swept last weekend at home against the Nationals. Washington has been the polar opposite in winning 10 of 11 and it just seems like they are scoring as often as their basketball counterparts, the Wizards.

Do the Mets have any chance against the MLB odds?

Pitching Matchup - deGrom vs. Scherzer

Jacob deGrom (0-1, 2.55 ERA) is being called upon to changes the fortunes of the Mets. While others on the New York staff might generate more notoriety, manager Terry Collins does have a starting pitcher who wants the ball and can provide as many consistent innings as deGrom. He can work his mid-90's fastball on both sides of the plate, plus north and south and his breaking pitches are the best on the staff. deGrom is 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA in eight career starts against Washington.

With the Metropolitans in a major slump, about the last pitcher they need to face is Max Scherzer (3-1, 1.95), Besides being off to another great start, Mad Max is 6-3 with a 1.99 ERA in 12 career games against the Mets (11 starts). It would make sense for New York to get as many left-handed batters they can to face Scherzer, since righties are batting an absurd .091 against him.

Nationals Offense is "Sick", the Mets are just Sick

Washington's is coming off their best-ever 10-game road trip at 9-1 and while Colorado is a hitter's paradise, not everyone scores 46 runs in four games like the Nationals did. Bryce Harper is stupid hot in batting over .400 and it is hard to find Nationals batter that is not swinging well.

After missing three games, Yoenis Cespedes tried to go yesterday but left in the fourth inning with "hamstring tightness". Take that bat out of the lineup plus Wilmer Flores and Lucas Duda who are on the DL and New York has a makeshift lineup card.

Betting Odds, History and Bullpen Numbers

Washington was sent out as -155 home favorite with total of 7. New York has not minded visiting the nation's capital in splitting the last 18 contests there and the OVER is 9-8-1. Because the Nationals are scoring 6.3 RPG, that covers up the worst bullpen in the National League, yet at some juncture this will matter. New York has the sixth-best ERA in the NL, but has blown half their eight save attempts.

The Winner Is...

Have to admit for MLB picks, taking Washington on the run line is inviting. What concerns me is the Nats bullpen which could give a lead away, thus, I will stick with more conservative approach and take them on the money line versus Mets club who is 3-10 against NL teams with a team batting average of .275 or better.
