It is looking more likely day by day that both White Sox and Royals will be out of the playoff picture. Today they meet up in Kansas City in what I think is an underrated pitching matchup between José Quintana and Ian Kennedy. Is there still value in backing these two pitchers to have quality starts?

CH White Sox vs Kansas City Royals
Odds makers currently have this game on the total at 8 across the board with the higher juice of around -120 at most places. For my MLB pick I'm going to take under the total MLB odds of 8 like at Pinnacle -119. Interestingly enough both of these pitchers have struggled against these opposing teams today so I'm a bit surprised at not only the total but the number on that total.

Chicago White Sox
José Quintana gets the start for Chicago with a 2.93 ERA and 1.12 whip this season while making his third road start in a row. This is arguably Quintana's best season so far in his four major league years and he has been stellar both at home and on the road. In his last 10 games he has only had really one bad outing which of course was at Boston, the best hitting team in the league, where he allowed six earned runs in just five innings. Outside of that in nine out of his last 10 games he has been extremely tough and in his last five games he has given up nine total earned runs.

The issue for him is keeping the ball in the park as he tends to give up the long ball a bit too much, however he is facing a Kansas City team that doesn't hit the ball out of the park all that often. Speaking of Kansas City I find it interesting that he has actually gotten knocked around a little bit against them this season allowing seven earned runs over 14 innings, and yet the odds makers have set the juice a bit higher across the board. This makes me believe they understand his true value and that he is very capable of coming in and having a solid outing. Offensively there is not a lot to talk about with the White Sox as they rank in the bottom part of the league in most categories like 23rd in OPS, 24th in total bases, and 26th in runs per game.

Kansas City Royals
Ian Kennedy starts for Kansas City with a 4.03 ERA and 1.19 whip coming off of a one-hit no earned run six inning outing versus Tampa Bay. Like Quintana he has seen his own troubles this season especially when he gives up the long ball which was highlighted by a recent performance versus Cleveland where he allowed seven earned runs in four innings off of four home runs. However, outside of that outing back on July 20th he has been really good in his last nine games allowing at most four runs in any of those games in which he did twice. Recently he has been much better in keeping the ball in the park having not allowed a home run in his last three starts over 18 innings.

As well like Quintana, he did not pitch well against the team he is facing today in the White Sox allowing seven earned runs off of nine hits in just five innings. That being said though this actually gives him the opportunity to bounce back against them and pitch like he is capable of which includes the fact his numbers improve at home where he holds a 3.78 ERA with batters hitting just .223 against him. At the plate Kansas City as I've mentioned in articles past is a much better home hitting team than they are on the road. Still, for the most part their numbers are not all that great (27th in runs per game overall) so I anticipate them to score just a few today but for these teams combined to stay below the number.
