Cardinals' Wainwright has not got off to a good start this season, neither has Astros' McHugh. MLB odds have the total for this matchup pretty high, too high perhaps?

The MLB Odds have set the total for this game at 8.5 like at Pinnacle Sports +100. This total is just too high in my opinion as both of these starters are better than their numbers as well as having good relief staffs behind them. For my MLB pick I will back under the total not because this game is at a National League park but that I expect both pitchers to keep the damage to a minimum.

Houston Astros
Collin McHugh gets the start for Houston and comes in with a 5.22 ERA and 1.50 whip with Astros hitting just .236 as a team. McHugh has not pitched nearly as well as he is capable of and has gotten roughed up his last two starts allowing eight earned runs in his last two starts over nine innings.

However, in his last three seasons in the majors he has a decent 3.84 ERA which actually drops to 3.75 on the road in that same time span with batters hitting .252 against him overall. At an even closer look he has a 3.60 ERA at night in that span with batters hitting under .250 against him. After McHugh comes in a solid relief staff for the Astros with an overall 3.19 ERA and batters hitting just .228 against them.

Of course they are facing one of the best offenses in the major leagues but I believe McHugh is good enough to keep the damage low and for the relief staff to do the same. At the plate Houston ranks in the bottom third of most offensive categories highlighted by leading the major leagues in strikeouts at 9.75 per game.

St. Louis Cardinals
Adam Wainwright takes the hill for the Cards and comes in with a 5.21 ERA and 1.34 whip with St. Louis ranking as one of the top offensive teams in all of baseball. Just look at their numbers this year, second in runs per game, total bases, and OPS as well as ranking in the top five in homeruns per game, hits per game, and run differential.

I could list more but simply put this is a well-rounded offensive club. Wainwright, like McHugh is a lot better than his numbers this season with a career 3.09 ERA and 1.17 whip. In his last two starts it seems like he is starting to come around allowing just four earned runs in 13 innings off of only seven hits. He should have a lot of success against a subpar hitting Astros team combined with the fact the Cards have one of the better relief staffs in the National League.

Currently Cardinal relievers have a combined 3.68 ERA with batters hitting just .222 against them. Look for Houston to not put up much today against this staff and even though St. Louis will put up their share most likely, the number of 8.5 is just a bit too much in my opinion for both teams combined to go over.
