Off to an 0-7 start with his free baseball picks, it's probably a good idea to fade this handicapper's play for Game 2 of the series between the Cardinals and Nationals on Tuesday.

MLB Season Record: 0-7 (-7.42)

Game 1 of the series between St. Louis and Washington went to the bats. Now it's up to Lance Lynn and Gio Gonzalez to try and reverse that when the Cardinals and Nationals resume their set Tuesday (7 PM ET) under the watchful eyes of ESPN. BetOnline is selling Washington on a -135 moneyline with 8½ for the total.

Monday's series opener had it all with 20 runs, 29 hits, stolen bases and plenty of sloppy defense in the Nationals' 14-6 win. Washington closed as light chalk on the MLB odds to pull ahead 17-16 in games between these clubs at Nationals Park over the years. The Nats and Cards split four here a year ago, and with Game 1 in the books the 'over' has cashed now in four of the last five on this diamond.

Fowler Hitting .500 (10-20) Lifetime Vs. Gonzalez

For a guy who hadn't been on an MLB mound in 17 months, Lynn did an admirable job in his season debut last week. Ironically, the start came against the same team he'd last faced in the 2015 NLDS, the Chicago Cubs, and he managed to get an out into the fifth inning before manager Mike Matheny lifted him after 98 pitches and two runs coming plateward. It ended in a no-decision for the former Ole Miss star, and he'll be facing the Nationals for the first time in almost two years. Lynn has two previous career starts here, working a combined 12 innings while allowing two runs.

Looking to rebound from a 2016 campaign that saw him register his highest ERA with Washington (4.57), Gonzalez got his 2016 started well against the Marlins last Thursday. The southpaw worked six shutout innings, walking one and whiffing seven only to earn a no-decision in a 10-inning, 4-3 Miami victory. This will be his seventh start against the Cardinals since joining the Nats in 2012, Washington 3-3 in the previous six with Gonzalez pitching to a 2.72 ERA.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Jim Reynolds, who plays second fiddle to chief Dale Scott on this crew, calls balls and strikes Tuesday evening, his first plate assignment of the season. The Massachusetts native hasn't shown much of a tendency either way on totals the past two seasons, his dish duties running 30-28-3 O/U/P in 2015-16. This is just his second plate assignment at Nationals Park since start of the '13 season, the previous two going 'over' and ending in a Washington victory.

It should be a nice evening in DC with temps in the upper 70s, mostly clear skies and a light southerly breeze (out to left). One general rule I follow in betting is playing against teams on losing streaks of five games or more. Since my free baseball picks are on a run of seven wrong sides, they should also be faded until the string is broken. I'm looking for St. Louis to even the series and taking the underdog in this one.
