Baltimore has its brooms ready as a slight favorite on the MLB odds for Thursday’s series finale at Camden Yards against the struggling Texas Rangers.

MLB Season Record: 48-51-1 (-1.15)

While the sun slowly sets on the 2017 season for the Texas Rangers, the Baltimore Orioles are desperately trying to make one more push to get into the playoff hunt. The Charm City crew can take one more step towards the postseason Thursday (7:05 PM ET) when they go for a sweep of the Rangers. Cole Hamels (4-0, 3.05) is tasked with preventing the sweep for Texas against Baltimore’s Wade Miley (4-8, 5.40), the O’s slightly favored with a big 10-run total.

The Orioles began the series with a 3-1 decision on Monday before posting lopsided triumphs the past two nights, 12-1 and 10-2, the latter closing -145 on the Birds at Bookmaker. The victories give the Orioles a 63-56 advantage over the Rangers at Camden Yards, and the clubs had played 6-straight ‘unders’ on this field prior to Baltimore’s eruption the past two games.

O’s 1-4 In Miley’s Last 5 Starts

It would be hard to find a better pitcher than Hamels the past few weeks. His first start back from a 2-month DL stint due to a strained oblique was ugly, but the southpaw has been money since then with the Rangers winning his last three starts and Hamels allowing just two runs over 22 innings. The 33-year-old has also done well against the Orioles since joining the Rangers, Texas winning 2 of 3 assignments and Hamels pitching to a 3.09 ERA.

When Miley earns a decision, it’s bad news for bettors following Baltimore with a 4-8 record; when he no-decisions, that is where the money lies with the O’s 5-2 and up 3 units vs. the MLB odds in those games. Four of his eight setbacks have come in his last five starts, Miley posting a 9.00 ERA in that span. He has been better at home (4.63 ERA) than on the road (6.10), but it hasn’t mattered where Miley faces the Rangers over his career, seven starts yielding a 1-5 record on his personal ledger with a 5.75 ERA in 40.2 frames.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Hal Harrison ‘Tripp’ Gibson III completes one full turn through Brian Gorman’s crew with dish duty Thursday. It has been close to a month since he called balls and strikes and brings an 8-7 O/U record into the matchup. Home teams are 9-6 when Gibson is under the mask, 8-2 when favored. Gibson worked a Rangers-Orioles game in Baltimore last August when Miley was also on the mound, a 5-3 Texas triumph that failed to reach a 9½ game mark.

It’s going to be a hot one in Baltimore today, temps still in the low 90s at game time with only a hint of a SW breeze (out to right). Not sure if Texas can avoid Baltimore’s brooms, but I am confident enough in Hamels cooling O’s bats with a free baseball pick on the ‘under.’
