Giants teammates greeting the public

When looking at Monday's MLB slate, one thing that instantly stands out is the lack of quality starting pitching. Watch as we navigate our way through the night session with a couple of winning MLB picks.

Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Chicago is In a Class By Themselves
Whenever there's a chance to "snatch" the Cubbies (91-51) at reasonable MLB betting odds, one must do so. Tonight is a perfect example of this as the Cubs face a team that's fighting for a wild-card spot in the St. Louis Cardinals (75-67). The fact that St. Louis is a respectable team with something to play for makes the odds reasonable and as a bonus, Kyle Hendricks (14-7, 2.07 ERA) get's the start and he possesses one of the best ERA's in the MLB.

Kyle Hendricks
In his last 7 outings, Hendricks is 5-0 and hasn't allowed more than 2 earned runs in any outing while pitching at least 6 innings in each of these outings. The bettor couldn't ask for anything more than that. Hendricks has also held the opposition in check as they're hitting a mere .206 off of him all season long. The only drawback where Hendricks is concerned is that the 12 1/3 innings that he did pitch against the Cards, he allowed 6 runs (4.37 ERA). This is a pitcher that won't beat himself. Combine the strength in pitching with the Cubbies offense and they're a tough combination to beat no matter what the other team is playing for.

Yesterday was a "feel good" game for the Cubs as Jake Arrieta pitched well and the Cubs offense didn't have to totally rely on their two best hitters in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo in their 9-5 victory over a hard-hitting Houston Astros squad.

Addison Russell continued to show glimpses of talent and he's a streaky young player. He hit his 20th home run of the season and went 3 for 4 with 3 runs for the game.Russell is hitting .321 in the month of September and he and Jorge Soler are a threat to the opposition at the bottom of the batting order. Chicago got to 40 games over .500 with a complete team effort and they come into this game with a great pitcher in Hendricks. Make this National League team, Cubs, your MLB pick, the value is certainly there.

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants

Re-igniting
The San Francisco Giants are a team that have had their ups and downs all season long. This is a team that dominated the division and then lost control to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Finally, we start to see the light at the end of the tunnel as the Giants (77-65) swept a weak Arizona Diamondbacks team and now they face another weak team in the San Diego Padres (59-84). The bettor has every reason in the world to think the Giants will take care of the Pads quite easily.

Average Pitcher With "Ace Stuff"
This is exactly how I look at starting pitcher, Jeff Samardzija (11-9,4.00 ERA). Samardzija had some really good seasons with the Chicago Cubs, but at the time, the Cubbies were a lousy team that would never provide Samardzija with run support. Now, he's on a team that's won World Series' before. This is a great team for him to be on and it's a great spot for him in this game as the betting odds indicate.

Samardzija has been a flatout beast as of late. In his last 6 outings, he's allowed 10 earned runs in 36 2/3 innings pitched. He's not the pitcher that he used to be when he would go the entire 9 innings and pitch in excess of 120 pitches, but he's certainly good enough to be a number 2 or 3 guy on this Giants pitching staff. Look for Samardzija to pitch well against a very weak San Diego offense.

Losing Is Contagious
When your best hitter is hitting .258 for the season, most likely your team is going to be a bottom-feeder and that's the case for the lowly Pads, who have to hit in a "pitcher-firendly" park such as Petco Park. San Diego offers very little resistance to the opposing pitcher where the offense is concerned as Will Myers practically carries this team on his back, leading the Padres in every offensive statistical category.

For the season, Myers has 24 HR, 80 RBI, and a. 258 BA. This is a player that was having a great season and then tailed off a bit. That said, he's still a force on this team as he's hit safely in 8 out of his last 9 games. Myers is just 0 for 7 against Jeff Samardzija for his career. I know it's a small sampling, but I look for a hungry San Francisco Giants team to beat up on the Padres.
