On Sunday we pick the few late games that are available to maximize print time, but that’s quite okay because I see some good offerings.

New York Mets (60-70) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (74-57)
Back From the Bereavement List ……
I’m the last person to like to see someone pass away, but in most cases, when a player loses a loved one, they come back to the playing field angry and strong.

Bartolo Colon (11-10, 3.85) has sadly lossed his mother and even though Colon has a poker face on the mound and appears that he doesn’t take things serious, he’ll be all business today at Dodger Stadium. To make things even better, he faces one of the Dodgers weaker pitchers in Kevin Correia (2-0, 4.09).

The Mets have lost 2 straight games in L.A. and 7 out of their last 10, but the MLB odds say it all. If Los Angeles is such a dominant team, why are they only a -112 betting favorite at home against a slightly above average pitcher such as Colon?

Lucas Duda
You can also include .300 hitter Daniel Murphy on this list, but New York will need California native Lucas Duda to keep coming up big in crucial spots. Last night, Duda hit his 24th home run in what has been a very successful season for him with the departure of Ike Davis. Duda is the one player on the Mets that can change the complexion of a game with one swing of the bat, especially against a “soft” pitcher such as Correia.

One side note is the ineffectiveness of David Wright. This is a player that was elected captain of the Mets and signed a big contract. Wright is lucky to be the 3rd best offensive player on his team as he’s having a disastrous season. I like to bash Wright at any cause because he’s stealing money from the Mets. Wright has 8 home runs on the season and his batting average is down to just .265. He’s 2 for his last 21 at-bats.

Despite Wright, I have a feeling that Bartolo Colon comes out like a beast today against a very tough Dodgers lineup.

Sunday Night Baseball

Los Angeles Angels (76-52) vs. Oakland Athletics (76-52)
The Battle of California
Both teams have identical records and the A’s look to go for the sweep at home as they send Scott Kazmir (14-5, 2.73) to the mound and he’s opposed by Jered Weaver (13-7, 3.70) for the Angels.

The Athletics are on Sunday Night Baseball for a second straight week, but look for better results as they lost last week as Jon Lester suffered his first loss with Oakland. Can Oakland “flip the script” and complete the sweep?

Low Moral?
I’m sensing a bit of deflation from the Angels balloon that looked like it could be possibly headed to the World Series. The injury of ace Garrett Richards is a crushing blow and the Halos will need to basically get over it and play the way that they’ve played all season to get them to this point. They send out Jered Weaver, who once appeared to be a hall of fame pitcher, but after injuries, Weaver is a slightly above average pitcher himself and he’s very inconsistent. This is a game where the Halos offense, led by Mike Trout, will need to flex their muscles as a new and improved Scott Kazmir will be tough to beat.

Kazmir has done a spectacular job of reviving his career, but has been a bit inconsistent lately. He’s alternated wins and loses in his last 5 starts. In these starts, he’s allowed 15 runs in 30 2/3 innings. This isn’t bad work at all, but he’s certainly hittable at this time in the season. He has the daunting task of facing the best hitter in the game in Mike Trout and an up and coming Kole Calhoun at the leadoff spot.

The Angels have a very deep lineup as Howie Kendrick (5 HR, 53 RBI, .283, 13 SB) and Erick Aybar (6 HR, 53 RBI, .274, 14 SB) are also hot as of late and make the Angels lineup a very tough one to pitch against from 1 to 9. This will be no cakewalk for Kazmir.

Free MLB Pick: Los Angeles +124 at 5 Dimes (Look for the Halos to avoid the sweep)
