It is always fun when the New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox because it is the best rivalry in baseball. Today they meet in Boston with two solid starters on the mound. With two teams that can hit, have the oddsmakers set the total too high?

New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka gets the start for New York and comes in with a 3.04 ERA and 1.07 whip while the Yankees have won the last seven times he has started on the mound. Tanaka is really starting to come into his own as a major league pitcher and over his last seven starts he has been stellar allowing just 16 earned runs in over 50 innings of work. Against Boston this season he has also been really good allowing just three earned runs in just under 13 innings of work in two starts so most likely he will come in with a lot of confidence to pitch another good ballgame. In his one opportunity this season to pitch in Fenway he was very good, however, the past three seasons he holds an overall 6.46 ERA there with Boston garnering 11 earned runs off of his 15 innings pitched along with 20 hits. Although he is having a great season we should consider the fact that Boston is hitting .317 against him at home in that time frame. At the plate, the Yankees have been struggling over their last five games but this should be a good spot for them to break out and score enough to help get over the total. They don't strike out very much so they should be able to put together enough quality at-bats.

Boston Red Sox
Eduardo Rodriguez gets the start for Boston and comes in with a 4.70 ERA and 1.28 whip but has allowed just 12 earned runs over his last 41 innings of work. He has really turned his season around and combined with how Tanaka has been pitching makes a number on this game seem way off. Against New York, he has been really good as well allowing a total of two earned runs in 14 innings off of just seven hits and two starts. Despite his good pitching though Boston has lost seven out of the last 10 games, he has been on the mound mostly due to little run support. I expect for the Red Sox to knock the ball around a lot better today considering their overall success against Tanaka in Fenway. In their last couple of games Boston has not swung the bats particularly well against the starting pitching they have faced but they are the type of team that you cannot hold down for long. I have already mentioned many times this season that they are the best offense in baseball and at home, they can really get hot. Expect for them to score in bunches today.

Final Analysis
Oddsmakers have set the total for this game at 9 across the board with much higher juice on the under at most places. That makes perfect sense but I believe it also provides some value on backing these teams to score quite a few runs today so for my MLB pick I will take over the total of 8.5 like at Pinnacle sports +110. Grabbing plus money value on a total with two teams that can at times have some really high-scoring games I think is a way to go in this rivalry matchup today.
