Top-Value Total Plays Featured In Wednesday MLB Picks Of The Day

Wednesday, June 22, 2016 1:44 PM GMT

Wednesday night features a full slate of baseball and we are going to review all the totals and choose only the sharpest to include in our MLB picks tonight.

Swinger's 2016 MLB Record: 37-18, +19.21 units
I took a day off yesterday from the long grind that is the Major League Baseball schedule after taking a shot with Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals on Monday night against the LA Dodgers. The talented Strasburg was a sizeable MLB odds underdog only because his opposing number was the immaculate Clayton Kershaw. Unfortunately, Strasburg was a late scratch and thus if the pitcher(s) doesn't go, I don't go. That's why when you make your MLB picks, always make sure to list the pitchers. It costs you nothing and insures that the starting pitchers you analyzed will indeed be those trotting out to the mound.

After that canceled ticket we move on to tonight's slate of games. Today we will be analyzing the top totals on the board with a view towards padding a bankroll that is +19.21 units, courtesy of a 37-18 record. Please remember folks that these totals, like the odds set on the actual games, are predicated on the pitchers involved so if at least one starter is scratched, so too is the bet. Let's get 'er done.

Diamondbacks vs. Blue Jays
Robbie Ray (4-5, 4.32 ERA, 1.57 WHIP) will get the nod for the Diamondbacks and has pitched well over his last pair of starts. He limited the Phillies in his last performance to two runs on seven hits over six innings of work en route to Arizona’s 10-2 thrashing of the Phillies last week. His previous start proved to be a gem as he tossed seven plus innings of shutout ball, resulting in a 6-0 blanking against the Marlins. The 24-year-old has yet to face the Blue Jays in his short career but boasts a 3.05 ERA on the highway this season.

His opposing number is J.A. Happ (8-3, 3.41 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) who spun a gem of his own in his last outing when he shut the Phillies down, allowing just three hits and no earned runs over seven innings in a 13-2 demolition of Philadelphia on Thursday of last week. Happ needed to put forth a solid outing after he was tagged for a combined 10 runs in his previous two starts.

We understand that the Jays can mash when in the groove but slugger Jose Bautista is in a walking boot and on the 15-day DL while Troy Tulowitzki is just getting back after almost a month-long absence of his own. The teams combined for six runs last night as the Diamondbacks prevailed by a 4-2 score. I find the total to be a bit too generous here not to bite. The D-Backs are a middling 13th in runs scored while the Jays are 7th but with a paltry .246 team batting average (21st). Let’s go low here and grab the juice instead of potentially paying it.

White Sox vs. Red Sox
The Red Sox ferocious offense is getting tamed recently having plated just four runs over their last three games. Unfortunately for Boston fans, their team will be running headlong into a fine pitcher in Jose Quintana (5-7, 2.63 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) tonight. Though his record may be under .500, that has more to do with an anemic White Sox offense that resides in the bottom third of the four major statistical categories than any lack of effort on his part.

On the flipside, we have Eduardo Rodriguez, a bright spot in the Sox dismal 2015 campaign, who has not been able to get on track this year due to injuries. However, reports are that he is coming around and despite his bloated 6.97 ERA, this kid has got major skills. I like this game to go low as it did in the two previous meetings between these clubs (both 3-1 White Sox victories) because neither lineup is generating much offense and it could very well turn out to be a pitcher’s duel if Rodriguez gets his act together.
