Our handicapper is streaky, but luckily for us he is on a good one here as we start a new week of action. Read on as Mark Lathrop identifies two teams worth backing as he gives his Monday MLB Picks of the day.

The Seattle Mariners have to be glad to be back home in Safeco on Monday night, as they come off of a four-game series in which they got swept in Toronto. They have a great home record and host the worst road team in the American League on Monday night.

Seattle briefly made it back to .500 in the last week, yet crashed back down to earth as they lost the last four games in Toronto. Their most consistent starter, Yovanni Gallardo, gets the start at home on Monday. “Consistent starter” is a bit of a misnomer, as Gallardo is currently the only one of Seattle’s opening day starting five pitchers that is not on the DL. But Gallardo has been decent on the year, putting up a 3.76 FIP over 39.1 innings pitched. He’s done well at keeping the baseball in the yard as well, running only an 8.8% HR/FB rate.

Oakland has not only struggled on the road this year, but they have struggled against right-handed starters like Gallardo. On the year through the weekend, the Athletics are batting just .232 on the road with 3.4 runs average per game. Against righties they are batting an even worse .226 average. Seattle is desperate for a win here at home, and this is the best chance they have in this series with AAA arms coming in to start the other games. I’m backing Seattle at -125 on the moneyline at Pinnacle as one of my Monday night MLB Picks of the Day.

Atlanta Braves vs Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto all of the sudden finds themselves in the midst of a hot streak, winning their last five games. Now they get the rebuilding Atlanta Braves in town as they look to make up ground in the AL East.

At 43 years old, the contract that Bartolo Colon has with the devil to delay his baseball demise has seemed to run out. Colon is running his worst FIP in his career in a healthy year at 5.12, and his 7.22 ERA is a reflection of the results he is getting on the mound. Colon is fooling nobody at the plate lately and has allowed a .295 batting average on the year and the worst WHIP in nearly 20 years. Over seven starts, Colon has a 1-4 win-loss record over 38.2 innings pitched.

Mike Bolsinger gets this start for the Blue Jays, only his second start of the year. He only has to be just average to beat the Braves and Bartolo Colon here and I like his chances. Bolsinger started the year in AAA and has bounced back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation, but all he needs here is a few effective innings before handing it over to the Toronto bullpen. I’m counting on Bolsinger being able to pitch with an early lead here, which makes the Blue Jays at -123 good value at 5Dimes as one of my Monday MLB Picks of the Day.
