For Thursday’s major league baseball action we are going head to Los Angeles where the Dodgers host the Miami Marlins. We’re going look at the total for this game as odds makers seem to have come out with a total little bit lower than what these two pictures ERA’s should command.

Miami Marlins

Edinson Volquez gets the start for Miami and comes in with a 4.41 ERA and 1.67 whip. He is actually pitched better than his numbers but has been walking players at a pretty high rate emphasized by his eight walk performance versus Tampa Bay back on May 2nd. However, he is still a pretty decent pitcher and overall in his last three games he’s allowed just seven earned runs over 15 innings along with just 13 hits. Although I don’t expect for him to come in and be lights out and keep the Dodgers scoreless I do expect for him to do enough to at least to keep the damage to a minimum. At the plate Miami has been less than stellar averaging 4.24 runs per game which ranks them 22nd in the major leagues. They are hitting .258 as a team and they do rank in the middle league in home runs, but I think they might struggle a little bit tonight against a pitcher who is much better in my opinion than his current numbers indicate.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start for Los Angeles and comes in with a 4.99 ERA and 1.60 whip well above his 3.42 career ERA and 1.24 whip. I like for him to come in and pitch a good ballgame considering the fact he just got lit up in Colorado allowing five earned runs off of eight hits in four innings. Prior to that start he was very good allowing two total earned runs over 11 innings and eight hits versus San Francisco and Philadelphia. I really believe he is a much better pitcher than his current numbers and I think he will come in and be very effective versus Miami. At the plate Los Angeles is one of the better offensive teams in major league baseball averaging 4.90 runs per game and hitting .262 as a team ranking them seventh and eighth in the league respectively. They’ve good numbers across the board but they are coming back from a road trip so they might not be quite as sharp tonight. Combined with the Marlins I simply don’t think they get to this total.

 MLB Odds

Odds makers have come out making the total 8 for this game and for my MLB pick I will back under the total. With the way the numbers work out in proportion to these two pitchers ERA’s coming in it seems to me odds makers have set a pretty low line. However, I’m going to back them in that assessment tonight.
