It's a sad day in baseball today, as Jose Fernandez of the Marlins has passed away at just 24 years of age and headed for the Hall of Fame, baseball has lost an ambassador.  Here are your MLB Picks of the Day

St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs

Huge Game For the Cardinals
With just 8 games remaining in the regular season, every game is of utter importance to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards trail the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets  by 1/2 game at 81-73, but the one positive  for the Cards is that each one of these teams has 73 losses and the Cardinals have played a game less.

They will face the test of their season, on national television, and against the ferocious Jon Lester (18-4, 2.36). Lester has been one of the main reasons why the Chicago Cubs (98-56) have been the best team in baseball and could be a huge factor in the Cubbies breaking a streak of over 100 years without a World Series Title.

The Hottest Pitcher In Baseball
At this point, Jon Lester is just automatic as he sports an 0.58 ERA in the month of September in 31 innings pitched. This is a pitcher that goes deep into games and hasn't allowed more than 2 earned runs in each of his last 10 starts. Lester has went from the number 2 pitcher on the Cubs staff to the ace. How will the Cardinals stop the momentum that Jon Lester possesses; momentum that we haven't seen in a long time.

Anthony Rizzo
Both Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo have carried this Chicago Cubs offense all season long. Both players will end up with 30 to 40 home runs, over 100 RBI's and a near .300 batting average. Combine that with the pitching that Chicago sends out to the mound and this team is unstoppable.

As of late, Rizzo has been the hotter player, hitting .360 in his last 25 at-bats. He's also had major success against St. Louis' starting pitcher for tonight in Carlos Martinez. In 23 at-bats, Rizzo is hitting .304 with 3 HR and 7 RBI's against Martinez. I could see either Anthony Rizzo or Kris Bryant making an impact in this game, but Jon Lester is the key figure in this game as he's simply unhittable.

Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Closing Out the Division
The Los Angeles Dodgers (89-66) have had an outstanding season, but are the only team to not clinch their respective division title in the National League. This is about to happen as the Dodgers are 7 games ahead of the 2nd place San Francisco Giants and L.A. has won 4 straight games. They certainly aren't the best team in baseball, but the playoffs are about the teams that get hot at the right time and Los Angeles is one of those teams that's playing well when they need to. This afternoon, starting pitcher, Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 3.63 ERA) faces a Colorado Rockies (73-82) squad which is much less imposing on the road than they are at Coors Field.

Magic Number Is 1!
Thanks to a 14-1 win yesterday led by Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers have to be ecstatic that their ace is back and their offense is running on all cylinders.

Justin Turner and Josh Reddick are coming off of monster games as Reddick was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, a home run, and 5 runs batted in. As for Turner, he was a perfect 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 ribbies. I think that Josh Reddick is the missing piece on this Dodgers squad as he provides some pop to this lineup. He once hit 32 home runs in a season and is a somewhat streaky hitter. In the month of September, Reddick is hitting a red hot .397 with 2 HR and 8 RBI's in 58 at-bats.

The Dodgers have all of the incentive and momentum to win this game and I expect L.A. to clinch the National League West Division this afternoon.
