Our handicapper looks to pile on two teams that are having hard stretches lately. Read on as he points out the value on the card and makes his Wednesday MLB Picks of the Day.

Our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, lives in the Pacific Northwest so he knows the local team. In this case, he knows that they are playing bad, very bad.

The Seattle Mariners are in shambles right now with their patched-up rotation finally bearing fruit to bettors willing to fade them. They got rocked for the third night in a row on Tuesday night, losing 10-1 to this Washington team with Chris Bergman on the mound. On Wednesday they start Sam Gaviglio, who started a week ago against the White Sox and pitched five shutout innings. The White Sox lineup is a far cry from the Nationals though who are among the top of many offensive statistical categories. Gaviglio is a soft-tossing righty with little velocity difference between his pitches making his second start in the majors. You can be sure that the Nationals watched some tape on him and have a better idea of what is coming down the pipe versus the White Sox who caught him in his very first start.

Starting for Washington is Tanner Roark, and as long as he pitches an average game he should be in line to get the win here against Seattle. Roark is carrying an average 4.26 FIP on the season over 51.1 innings pitched, so the potential is there. Roark carries a .236 BAA and 25/7 K/BB rate at home, so this is definitely the spot to back him if there ever was one. I’m going to double dip here to try to take advantage of Seattle’s recent woes, taking the Nationals plus money on the run line and Over 9 runs on the total as two of my Wednesday MLB Picks.

Kansas City Royals vs. New York Yankees

The Royals have started to cool off since they hit their recent road trip, and in this game our MLB handicapper likes the prospect of them getting down early against the Yankees.

Jason Hammel starts this game for the Kansas City Royals and he has struggled mightily on the road this year. Over 15 innings pitched in that situation, Hammel has put up a 7.20 ERA and .343 batting average allowed. His last start was against these Yankees last week and gave up 5 earned runs in six innings pitched at home. The stakes are raised here with this start being at new Yankee Stadium.

Hammel has had serious issues with right-handers on the season and has allowed a .382 batting average against them. There is no doubt in my mind that the Yankees can’t put a lineup together to take advantage of this horrible split. For the value wager on this game, I am turning to a team total on the first 5 innings to take advantage of this fact.
