Our MLB handicapper spots a line that will definitely start moving due to square action coming in. In this case, it’s going to be ok to take a swing with the public and bet with the crowd.

Sonny Gray starts this game for the Oakland Athletics, just his fourth start of the season for the right-hander. He’s struggled a bit so far, especially against right-handed batters who he is allowing a .333 batting average against – albeit in a pretty small sample size. Either way, Boston would be wise to stack the lineup with righties and take advantage of the split that is presenting itself with Gray.

Showing no weaknesses at all this year is Gray’s opponent in this game, Red Sox’s Chris Sale. All of Sale’s peripheral statistics are excellent on the year, and he is allowing just a .152 average against right-handers and .192 against left-handers. Sale’s FIP of 1.78 suggest that even his miniscule 2.15 ERA could be better given some fielding luck. His HR/FB rate has dropped to 8.2% and he is striking out batters at a 13.04 K/9 rate. This is a lopsided pitching matchup, and for that reason I will be taking the Red Sox at -105 on the moneyline, currently available at BetOnline.

Chicago White Sox vs Seattle Mariners

We don’t even know who is starting for the Seattle Mariners anymore, and it’s definitely not who Scott Servais was thinking he would have on the mound to start the season. A combination of a AAA starter for Seattle and a struggling White Sox pitcher has the Over looking like the right choice.

Two starters with minimal experience take the mound in Seattle on Thursday night, and both leave a lot to be desired. Let’s start with Dylan Covey, who gets the start for the White Sox in this game. Covey is allowing righties to blast off on him this year to the tune of a .415 batting average allowed. Robinson Cano will be out of the lineup in this game, but his replacement is a right-hander so not much should change. Covey has also given up 7 home runs in just 21 road innings pitched on the year.

Sam Gaviglio takes his two innings of MLB experience into his start for Seattle, and a middling 2-3 record from AAA this year. What alarms me about Gaviglio is that he is a soft tosser with very small differences in velocity between his offerings. That is usually not a recipe for success in the MLB. If Gaviglio doesn’t give up enough runs to get this over the listed total look for the Seattle bullpen to finish the job as they carry a 5.45 ERA into this game.
