Toronto Blue Jays (Buehrle) vs. NY Mets (Syndergaard) 7:10 ET
The Toronto Blue Jays travel south from Boston to meet the Mets who enter with momentum after their come-from-behind (10-8) win on this field against Atlanta yesterday. That victory boosted the Mets home record to 24-11, numbers which trail only St. Louis and the LA Dodgers for home field superiority. This 4-game interleague set will go north of the border on Wednesday for the final 2 games. Though the Mets’ home field record must be respected, I must note that it is largely a function of an 11 game home win streak to begin the season. The Toronto Blue Jays have been good to us in the last week, as we have ridden them most every day of their current 11-game win streak. The pitching mismatch of current form between veteran Buehrle and rookie Syndergaard makes this a Top Play winner!
True enough the Mets are cruising at home. For the YTD, the New Yorkers have been largely carried by an outstanding pitching staff with a .686 OPS, 9th in MLB. Major issue has been their 22nd rank OPS of .688 (a large contrast to Toronto who has an MLB leading .784 OPS). The Mets currently hold a ½ game lead over Washington for NL East superiority. Once the Nationals get on track, that figures to be short lived! Rookie starter, Syndergaard, began the season with a 1.82 ERA after 4 starts. That has quickly disintegrated to a 2-4 record with a 4.67 ERA and 1.39 WHIP because of 2 recent outings in which Syndergaard has lasted just 10 innings, allowing 11 runs on 20 hits.
There is no question that Toronto is the hottest team in MLB. They just blasted Boston in a weekend set capped by a 13-5 victory on Sunday. In their 11-game win streak, they have averaged a mind blowing 8.0 RPG and .312 BA. You cannot ignore that when making MLB picks. With the poor current form of today’s opposing starter, those offensive numbers should continue. That offense will be ably aided by veteran starter, Buehrle, who is rounding into form. In a trio of recent starts, the veteran lefthander has gone 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA. Embellishing that current form is the fact that Buehrle will go for his 4th consecutive, complete game on the road. Buehrle is tough to solve when facing batters who are not familiar with him. In short, he is the best interleague pitcher in MLB. In 51 such starts, Buehrle is 30-10. This includes his last 9 starts in which he has a 1.97 ERA and his last 5 starts in which he is 3-1 with a 1.25 ERA.
With the huge offensive discrepancy in the OPS numbers of these two teams and the dichotomous current form of today’s starting pitchers, there can be little question that this play should obtain Top of the Ticket status.
