Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides a look at MLB Overnight Betting Lines for the games taking place on Friday, July 22.

New York Mets vs Miami Marlins
This is a big NL East battle here and I think the edge lies with the hometown Marlins in this series opener. Logan Verrett is a fringe arm and really is only in the rotation due to Matt Harvey’s season ending shoulder surgery. Verrett has been mediocre at best since joining this rotation and has allowed 21 runs in his last 24.1 innings of work and the Mets are just 2-5 in his seven starts including 1-4 in his 5 road starts and 0-3 in his last 3 starts overall.

On the flip side, Miami lefty Adam Conley has shown a great deal of promise for the Marlins and is pitching as well right now as he has at any point in the past. Conley has yielded just 4 earned runs on 11 hits in his last 17 innings of work with 5 walks to 18 strikeouts during that span and Miami has gone 5-1 in Conley’s last six starts.

If this game is close in the latter stages, I’d be willing to take my chance with the new look and improved Miami bullpen which has multiple strong arms ready and able to close out games and lock down opposing teams in the late innings. The Marlins are worthy of betting support on the MLB odds offere in this game as moderate home favorites.

Detroit Tigers vs Chicago White Sox
This is road chalk worth laying in this game on the Detroit Tigers as they head to Chicago to face the rapidly fading White Sox. The White Sox have dropped six of their last seven games including two demoralizing losses in Seattle against the Mariners which has left this game leaning toward selling at the trade deadline. Jacob Turner takes the mound for the struggling White Sox in this game and he’s not what I would call a reliable stopper.

Turner was lit up in a big way in his first start with the White Sox against the LA Angels allowing 8 runs in just 4 innings of work. Turner has been bounced around the Majors for a reason--he just isn’t that good and he will be in tough to shut down a dangerous Tigers lineup which I expect to bounce back strong after a tough series at the plate for them against the Minnesota Twins. On the flip side, Michael Fulmer has just about taken over the mantle as the ‘ace’ of his Detroit starting staff.

Fulmer has been consistent and steady all season long allowing 2 runs or less in 10 straight starts! Detroit is 12-2 with Fulmer on the mound this season including 8-2 in his previous 10 road starts and he’s likely to shut down a Chicago White Sox lineup that has scored just 15 runs in their last 7 games combined. Detroit is priced as hefty road favorites here but it is absolutely warranted. Every game means a lot for them as they try to hang in the AL Central and Wildcard races and for my MLB pick I expect them to take care of business against the downtrodden White Sox here.
