Our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, is guaranteed a successful July coming into the last day of the month. He looks to add some units to the month with his Monday MLB Picks of the Day.

The Atlanta Braves look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday afternoon, as a getaway day shows a mismatch in favor of the Braves.

Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies

Mike Foltynewicz starts this game for the Braves, and that likely marks the last time I will type out his full name in a sentence. Folty has been faulty against left-handers this year, but the Phillies don’t have a lineup that can take advantage of this fact. Other than that split, he’s been solid of late and carries a 4.08 FIP in July. He has also been very consistent since getting blown up for 8 runs in mid-June against the Nationals, and has given up 3 earned runs or less in seven straight starts. Folty comes into this game after beating the Dodgers and Diamondback on the road in back to back starts. A great feat. Those lineups are much better than the one he will see on Monday with the Phillies.

Rookie Nick Pivetta takes the mound at home for the Phillies, and he has been struggling of late with a 5.65 FIP in July. Pivetta gives up a .298 batting average against righties, which should help some of the fringe players in the Braves lineup that he will be facing. Pivetta beat the Braves in June – with Bartolo Colon on the mound – after giving up 3 earned runs over 5 innings pitched. I’ll look for the Phillies’ marginal bullpen to make the difference here and take the Braves on the moneyline as one of my Monday MLB Picks of the Day.

 Seattle Mariners vs. Texas Rangers

Felix Hernandez has had a great stretch in July and has pitched well all year at Safeco Field. He’ll match up with Cole Hamels in a game with a totals line that is not indicative of how these pitchers are dealing right now.

Cole Hamels has been hot in July in more than one metric and carries a .202 batting average allowed on the month. He got lit up against the Orioles in this month which sways his recent results, but his 4.41 FIP in July is the best mark he has put up all year. Hamels’ K-BB% of 14.8% in July is back to his prime norms, and his walk rate of 4.7% is excellent. He allows just a .189 BAA against lefties and a .233 BAA against righties on the season.

Speaking of great July’s, Felix Hernandez has allowed just a .191 BAA on the month and looks to continue his good trends at Safeco Field. He’s allowing left-handers to hit well off of him, but those numbers are skewed with a .364 BABIP against that side of the plate. Hernandez pitched one of his best games of the year against Texas in April, and I’ll look for him to have success again here. I’ll play that angle with a wager on the Under of 10.5 runs at Pinnacle as one of my Monday MLB selections.
