Our MLB handicapper is starting September strong. He comes off a sweep of yesterday's picks and looks to continue his winning record as he provides his Saturday MLB Picks of the Day!

A Milwaukee top rookie gets a start again this season and his 1.62 ERA in 3 starts earlier this season shouldn’t be ignored. He draws the Nationals’ Max Scherzer, here who always has value on an Under call.

Washington vs. Milwaukee

Brandon Woodruff will always have a place in this league as long as he carries a 5.6% HR/FB rate. He gave up 2 or less runs in his first three starts, yet opposing offenses found a hole in his game as he allowed a .310 BAA against left handers in those starts. He is murder against righties though, with a .177 BAA allowed. Woodruff led the minor leagues in strikeouts in 2016. His starts have been on the shorter side, which could be seen as a positive here with Milwaukee having a 3.86 bullpen home ERA.

Max Scherzer gets his second start after coming back from the DL last week. He was dominant in that start and gave up just one run over 7 innings with 10 strikeouts. Scherzer has also been murder on right handers, as he is allowing just a .126 BAA against them over 87.2 innings pitched. His strikeout numbers are also through the roof, with a 12.37 K/9 rate that is his best in his career. It would be easy to just lay down the chalk and back Scherzer in this game, but Woodruff has the capability to fire a gem and make him a hard luck loser. I’ll back a pitcher’s duel and Under in this case and take Under 8.5 runs at 5Dimes as one of my Saturday MLB Picks of the Day.

The Oakland A’s have been a profitable Over team on the season as a whole. In this game, they get a Mariners pitcher that struggles with control.

The Mariners put Yovanni Gallardo on the mound on Saturday – the only pitcher in their original rotation to stay healthy on the year. He’s running a 4.10 BB/9 rate and 5.41 FIP, so it is not a surprise that he spent some time in the bullpen regardless of his health. Gallardo is running a 7.46 ERA, 7.59 FIP, and 1.62 WHIP in the month of August, as the Mariners rotation struggles to finish up the year and stay in the Wild Card race.

Jharel Cotton of the Athletics is now pitching in the highest innings count of any season in his professional career. It seems to have affected his offerings, as his strikeout rate has dropped from 10.38 in July to 5.76 in August. Cotton last face the Mariners on August 9th and in that game he gave up 3 home runs, 6 earned runs, and only struck out two batters. He beat the Mariners in April, but also only struck out two batters in that performance. I’ll consider fatigue here, and along with Gallardo’s troubles take the Over in this game as one of my Saturday MLB selections.
