Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides an MLB odds preview for Wednesday night's matchup between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Shane Greene will face off against Ryan Vogelsong as the scene shifts to PNC Park in Pittsburgh for the first of two games in Pittsburgh between the Tigers and Pirates after those two teams played twice in Detroit earlier this week with the teams splitting those games. Greene is not someone that I expect to have a long-term place in the Tigers starting rotation. In fact, he is only in the rotation here because promising young lefty Daniel Norris acquired by the Tigers in the David Price trade last year with the Toronto Blue Jays is starting the season on the DL with a lower back injury.

Greene had very weak numbers last season posting a 6.88 ERA in 16 starts with a 2.9 walks per 9 innings and 5.38 strikeouts per 9 innings rate which indicates his inability to miss a ton of bats. Oddly enough despite those below average season long numbers, one of Greene’s best starts of the season came here at PNC Park against the Pirates last season throwing 8 innings of 3 hit, shutout baseball against Pittsburgh last April.

Betting Analysis
However, that isn’t necessarily an indicator of similar success here in this start and I feel the Pirates lineup is a notch or two stronger in 2016. Ryan Vogelsong will be getting a spot start here in place of Francisco Liriano who was placed on the DL yesterday with a right hamstring injury. Vogelsong is not a guy that I trust as a starting pitcher especially against a potent AL lineup like the Detroit Tigers. Vogelsong had three straight poor seasons as a member of the San Francisco Giants with a 5.73 ERA in 2013, 4.00 ERA in 2014 and a 4.67 ERA last season which doesn’t bode well for future success with the Pirates.

He has appeared in one game this season out of the bullpen for the Pirates and did not pitch well allowing 2 runs in 2 innings with a pair of walks and no strikeouts. The two games played in Detroit earlier this week between these teams sailed Over the total and I think we have another very mediocre pitching matchup here that should result in runs in bunches for both squads. Back this game as your MLB pick and go with Over the total at 8.5 runs on the MLB odds boards.
