The Twins travel to Motown to take on the Tigers in the first of a three-game set. Let’s review the MLB odds and see if these Tigers have enough bite to warrant laying the lumber against their AL Central rival.

Minnesota Twins (5-1) vs. Detroit Tigers (4-2)

The Twins find themselves atop the AL Central which is certainly unfamiliar territory. However, they have been getting solid pitching coupled with timely hitting and that equates to winning baseball no matter what uniform you wear. Starting pitcher Hector Santiago (1-0, 1.80 ERA, 1.2 WHIP) has contributed to Minnesota’s hot start as he pitched five innings of one run, five hit baseball in his season debut against the Royals last Wednesday in a 9-1 victory.

However, the issue I have with Santiago is the same one I have with the Twins. Neither is as good as they have performed up to this point. Santiago is a career 37-38 pitcher with a 3.83 ERA. The last three seasons he has posted ERA’s of 4.25, 5.58 and 4.70. He is little more than a journeyman pitcher and is on his third team in six years.

The Tigers are the goods and they will likely surface as the AL Central division winners this season. They have scoring punch and a solid pitching corps. Unfortunately, their starter today is 26-year-old southpaw Matt Boyd (0-1, 19.29 ERA, 3.83 WHIP) and he got torched in his debut against the White Sox, pitching only 2.1 innings and getting tagged for five runs on five hits. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence but it should be noted that he dazzled in his last start in Minnesota when he pitched eight innings of one-run, three-hit ball resulting in an 8-1 victory back in September of 2016.

And the Winner is…

The Tigers possess too strong a lineup to be silent against a pitcher of Santiago’s ilk. The 29-year-old lefty veteran owns a 2-5 record against Detroit with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.320 WHIP. He opposed the very same Matt Boyd in his last meeting against Detroit and was lit up for six runs on seven hits in that 8-1 loss last season.

As well as the Twins are playing we believe they are playing over their heads and will come down to earth in due time. That time could be now as Detroit is coming off a 2-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway and took three of four in that series against a very talented Boston ball club. The Twins don’t pose nearly the same challenge and the Tigers get to play in the friendly confines of Comerica Park. The oddsmakers have installed Detroit as fairly heavy favorites but when you win the game the juice is immaterial. Include the Tigers in your MLB picks this afternoon.
