To celebrate the “Boys of Summer,” SBR Forum has unveiled a June Betpoints Contest ... thus you will have to wait until three days after the Memorial Day holiday this year to start competing. Click below to get started.

Did you know that a big majority of teams that lead their respective divisions on Memorial Day go on to win said division? The Wild-Card Era began in MLB in 1995. We’ll throw out that season only because it got off to a late start off the players’ strike that ended the 1994 season early and canceled the postseason. Over a 20-year span from 1996-2015, 72 of the 120 division winners led their divisions after play was completed on Memorial Day.

The two best records after Memorial Day in the Wild Card Era were each posted in 1998: by the world champion Yankees (34-10, .773, seven games ahead) and Braves (37-14, .725, 8 1/2 games ahead). That is the only season the Wild-Card Era that all six division champions led after Memorial Day. If you want to go back even further, more than 53 percent of teams in first place on Memorial Day since divisional play began in 1969 went on to the playoffs.

Last year, four of the six division winners were leading at Memorial Day: the Red Sox (AL East), Rangers (AL West), Nationals (NL East) and Cubs (NL Central). The Royals were atop the AL Central and missed the playoffs. Cleveland won that division. The Giants were leading the NL West and would take a wild-card spot. The Dodgers won the West. Only two teams appear to be locks to be leading their division this Memorial Day and as of this writing: Houston in the AL West and Washington in the NL East. They happen to be the two biggest MLB betting favorites to win their divisions with the Astros at -2000 and Nationals at -300.

Every MLB bettor knows not to wager, say, against the Los Angeles Dodgers at home when Clayton Kershaw is on the mound. There’s a reason he’s usually a -250 favorite or more. The lefty has an obscene 1.99 ERA career in regular-season games at Dodger Stadium. You are simply asking to lose money there. But that’s also the beauty of baseball: there are surprising results on the schedule every day.

All it costs to join this contest is 5 Betpoints. Players must make a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 90 plays between June 1 and June 30 – so 2-3 per day if you want to spread it out. You can bet one unit on the money line, run line or totals. Players also are given four optional 3-unit Best Bets. First place earns 750 Betpoints and an SBR T-shirt. All players in the Top 5 earn Betpoints and a T-shirt. The standings are based on units won.  International users must enter a Bet365 account on the join page. Users from the United States must enter their SBR usernames. T-shirts can only be shipped to continental USA.

There are some marquee series in the month of June. The Dodgers visit the Indians in a great interleague matchup from June 13-15, for example. Many experts projected that to be the 2017 World Series matchup. The Red Sox visit the Astros in a potential playoff preview from June 16-18. The Orioles host the Cardinals the same weekend. The champion Cubs make their only visit to the Nationals from June 26-29.

Start getting prepared! June 1 is right around the corner.
